Perhaps the third time is the charm, Richard

I am trying to take the French since you did not respond for the Poles.

More fun to watch you use the cavalry anyway

Pod 2: Rumguff's Turks (24%) defeated Egos' Imperials (54%).

A thin wood covered part of the front midway between the two lines and soon it was filled with imperial Tercios and Janissaries. The latter came off best, with the cavalry on the Imperials left arriving too late to turn the situation round. Meanwhile on the right the turkish cavalry narrowly came out on top over the enemy kurassiers. Thanks for a good game!

Aryaman (Catholic Germans) won 18% vs 53% Egos (Protestant Germans)
The AI sent a Protestatnt force in a flanking march that arrived too late while the Catholics were routing the main protestant force. In multiplayer, Flanking marches seem to be rather detremental.

rbodleyscott (German Catholic 1632-1638) (56%) won vs TheGrayMouser (French 1635-1642) (63%)

To call this a confused battle would be a massive understatement. As it would to say that I was flabbergasted when the final turn came back with the result that I had (barely) won, despite cocking up one of my infantry moves a couple of turns before, resulting in an avoidable flank attack that eventually took out 3 of my infantry units.

The battle was so confused that for each of last few turns it took me several minutes to figure out the map orientation.

Good game Sir Mouser, thanks.

Another clobbering in pod 1:

- pantherboy's Protestants 1639-48 (14%) won vs. Hutze's Catholics 1639-48 (40%)
The battle was fought on an open field. pantherboy deployed his army in three mostly equal parts (left, center, right) and was therefore flexible in countering my movements. It ended in a more or less chaotic charge of the Catholics with predictable outcome. Thanks pantherboy for the game and lesson in good army deployment ;-)

All,

Well I see some daylight at the end of the tunnel. My life should return to normal next Tuesday morning.

Until then, I will be letting result posting slide and my games will fall behind.

I have a couple of tasks I need to do around the house and company for the weekend.

I'll catch everything back up starting Tuesday.

IMPORTANT: Keep posting your results -- I'll sweep them all up on Tuesday.

Thanks for bearing with me,

John

Pod 3 result:

rbodleyscott (Transylvanian 1618-1631) (6%) won vs Ulysisgrunt (Polish 1618-1632) (51%)

The Transylvanian army attacked from ambush positions in a large forest as the Poles approached....

Wonder of wonders, I seem to have caught Tiopepe having a bad day.

Shawkhan's Danes 1625-1629 (16%)actually squeaked by Tiopepe's Spanish 1621-1634 (51%) on a battlefield replete with woods.

Not able to stand toe to toe with Spanish tercios, I was forced to run and hide, then emerge with underhanded sneaky unfair attacks at opportune times.

A series of fortunate breaks allowed me the victory before Tioepepe's tercios could get their revenge on my honorless troops.

One of the most interesting parts of the fight involved small units in the woods on the right flank gradually drawing more and more forces into the fray. This action prevented Tiopepe's cavalry from advancing on my right flank, allowing my left wing cavalry to do nasty things to his tercios, until it was too late for them to affect the overall battle.

Too bad there is not a way to select battlefields in this game, as battles in these days were usually voluntary. The particular battlefield often determines which side has the advantage in a battle, as my Poles in one game found to their sorrow. No sane commander would have fought on that battlefield with a cavalry heavy army.

Attention, Ulysisgrunt!

Our re-iteration game of our first contest is ready for your participation.

I have taken the Spanish-Imperials of 1503-1533 this time and you get the much-improved French of 1526-1549.

This should give you a better game than the first one I unfortunately endured with the inferior French troops of 1494-1525.

See you on the battlefield, Grognard!

ggarynorman and Iandavidsmiith, I have not received challenges from you two yet.

These appear to be the last two games I have not started and I am waiting to continue with my utter humiliation at the hands of better commanders. :)

My experience from playing Field of Glory is, when one player gets to chose a map, that alone can often be decisive many a time.

I go with the assumption that both armies, for unknown reasons, were forced/compelled to fight that battle on whatever the skirmish map generator put together.
You still have the choice to attack, defend, probe etc.

but to be able to defend you need some defense. on a flat terrain forget it.
