His Most Catholic Majesty
Rumors speading from the closest advisors of the Doge has that during a tumultuous session of the Major Council the leading figures of the noblest families harshly clashed with some member of the lesser mercantile nobility, eager for signing the trade agreement with the Castilians.
Nobody still knows how the session ended but voices of the people speaks that the Supreme Tribunal of the "Quarantia" is going to take the issue in his hands.
As soon as official news will be released they will be made public!

4. A Potted history of the Ottoman Empire upto 1481

Originating from the Sogut beylik in Anatolia, which was becoming increasingly independent from the Seljuk Sultanate of Rum in the 13th century, Osman I established the Ottoman dynasty and became the first Sultan of the Ottoman Empire in 1299.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Osman_I_area_map.PNG

For the next 150 years there was intermittent warfare between the Ottomans and the Byzantines that culminated in the capture of Constantinople and the complete collapse of the Byzantine Empire in 1453.

Osman’s son, Orhan I expanded Ottoman territory by conquering Nicaea and Nicomedia during the 1330s and he began annexing territory in Europe after 1346 through his military successes in Thrace. He was also responsible for establishing a strong governmental system and army for the empire as well as a stable currency.

The next Sultan, Murad I, defeated the Byzantines at Adrianople in 1365 and moved the capital of his empire from Anatolia to Edirne (formerly Adrianople) in Thrace, signalling that the Ottomans intended further conquests in Europe. In subsequent decades, political instability in the Balkans allowed the Ottomans to make further territorial gains, reducing the Bulgarians and Byzantines to vassal status, and finally defeating the Serbs at Kosovo Field in 1389.

Murad’s son, Bayazid I, then defeated a Crusader army, led by King Sigismund of Hungary, at Nicopolis in 1396 and Albania was conquered shortly afterwards.

Ottoman forces also raided into Hungary, Bosnia and Wallachia at this time but they suffered a very serious reverse in 1402 at the Battle of Ankara when they were decisively defeated by Tamerlane’s army. Bayazid was captured and died in captivity and the Ottomans were reduced to being vassals of Tamerlane for a short period until civil war broke out among the Timurids after their leader’s death in 1405.

Mehmed I re-united the Ottomans by 1413 after nearly a decade of civil war (known as the Ottoman Interregnum) but his successor Murad II (Sultan from 1421) was initially unable to recover much ground in the Balkans. He was even forced to abdicate for a short period but he soon returned to defeat a Polish-Hungarian army at Varna in 1444 and a Hungarian-Wallachian army at Kosovo again in 1448. Having secured Bulgaria and Wallachia with these two victories, Murad II moved into Anatolia and defeated Tamerlane’s son Shah Rokh.

This is what TGM looks like . . .

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Murat_II.jpg

Mehmed II became Sultan in 1451 and he quickly annexed the Karamanlid emirate in Anatolia before turning his attentions to the capture of Constantinople which he succeeded in doing in 1453 bringing the Byzantine Empire to its final defeat . . .

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Siege ... fr2691.jpg

In 1462 Mehmed II moved his capital to Constantinople and described himself as a “Roman Caesar” and by the time of his death in 1481 the Ottoman conquest of the Balkans was almost completed.

The Venetian diplomats kindly thank the Castilian envoys for the proposal of a trade agreement but have to decline the offer given the fact that the situation in the east, where a desperate struggle is developing for the survival of the Serenissima possessions in the Balkans and Greece, put in danger by the armies of the mighty Ottomans and their wicked Serbian allies, forces the Republic to reserve every diplomatic efforts in the area, having left only one chance of an international deal.

(In the meanwhile it has been revealed that the leaders of the lesser mercantile nobility have been put in jails by the Supreme Tribunal of the "Quarantia", accused of having fuelled the riots that in the recent past costed a loss in internal stability and of looking only after their personal interest also in perilous time for the Republic)!

News arrived this morning from Slavonia of the first defeat of the Venetians troops in the campaign.
Though beaten after a bloody encounter the soldiers didn't lose heart, reorganized under the supervision of their commanders and retreated in good orders to their quarters maintaining a firm control over the province, that in the meanwhile had unfortunately been raided by the Serbian light horses.

Venetians 43/42 vs Serbians 45/48
(tactical defeat: 4.44%)

Soon after the bad news in Slavonia a messenger arrived in Venice heralding the annihilation of the Ottoman forces in Greece and the conquest of Attica.
All the population is in the streets and every square is full of songs and dances.
The Doge has stated that to celebrate the ejection of the Infidels from the European soil during the evening a great show of pinwheel will be held in San Marco Square!

Venetians 29/58 vs Ottomans 60/57
(strategic victory: 27.82%)
(Attica conquered)

The Major Council, after a long debate about the meaning of the last mixed events, has cautiously deliberated the construction of new fortifications in Negroponte, inviting the population to not lapse into excessive celebrations but to maintain instead the quietness due in workdays.

EDIT
Crete instead of Negroponte

RE-EDIT
Negroponte again. In Crete they've already been built before though I forgot to mention that in the summary!

If it's ok I will give up on Sicily and concede defeat. After giving it some thought I don't see how I can win at 750pts and just don't feel for doing it over again.

Two other actions though...

1. Building a Mosque in Rif.
2. Building of Merchant's Quarter in Al Jazair.

I have deployed, Ian, but I may just surrender if you have 20 "superior" Swiss units in your army. The Milanese only have 2 "superior" units so the battle will be pointless really.
