To Tame a Land B.C.

I was thinking ahead earlier about what to do when this campaign reaches its conclusion. One idea that has sprung to mind is to run a very similar format using Immortal Fire as the basic army book.

However, rather than selecting two armies, a culture/region would be chosen, giving a wider range of armies to use:

African
Late Dynastic Egyptian
Early Carthaginian
Kyrenean Greek

Barbarians
Thracian
Skythian or Saka
Early Sarmatian
Galatian

Hellenes
Classical Greek
Syracusan
Hellenistic Greek

Indian
Classical Indian
Graeco-Bactrian
Indo-Greek

Macedonian
Alexandrian Macedonian
Early Successor

Asiatic
Early Achaemenid Persian
Lydian
Late Achaemenid Persian

If you are interested in playing and/or have any suggestions about changing the format, let me know and I'll start a separate discussion thread.

Cheers!

Despite the ringing of bells, singing of hymns and the other paraphernalia of their faith, Tiavals' Crusaders have been driven back into the sea.

keyth(Arab Conquest) 18/38
Tiavals(Crusader) 56/55

Arab IC took the field and lost an FC, Crusader generals all ran away ;)

It was a terribly shameful battle. I was certain I would spread the good faith forward, but it was devastating, more to do with the People's Crusade than the Princes, sadly.

As for the Immortal Fire version, I'm certainly in!

I must admit that I was expecting much more trouble from the armoured superior HF. I think a combination of dice and your rout-ravaged right flank assisted me greatly!

Probably. My troop placement was disastrous. After a single rout most of my units were fragmented. I too had placed great expectations on them. Alas, it was not meant to be so. :)

Me too!

Suggestion 1: have Mauryan Indians rather than just classical - better army and fits with the dates anyway.
Suggestion 2: The first person to quote a line from the Bhagavadgita gets to choose to play India*.

"Treating pleasure and pain, gain and loss, and victory and
defeat
alike, engage yourself in your duty."

Bhagavadgita (2.38)

Actually, on a less seemingly frivolous note, I do have a suggestion.

I expect it's rather an unpopular idea, as most games and tourns are played in the way I am condemning, and we live in an age where more is amost always considered better.

In some ways FoG simulates ancient/medieval battle poorly - most notably by having 100 seperate little units all acting individually, and independently, like squads on a WWII battlefield. This weakness is exacerbated by playing with so many Army Points. Most people play most games at 500 AP but i recently played a slew of games at 300 and 350. And it is clear to me that these smaller, less dense, games are a much better simulation - and in many ways more fun. It's less slog, more manoeuvre. More space on the battlfield. And it's harder to mend a mistake made at set-up/early on. Battles are arguably more decisive too.

Many of us are playing the temp league, which will be followed by another league soon - many, many games at 500 pts. Maybe we could play this one tourn at 300/350?

I agree that playing with smaller point totals in the 300-400 point range would be a nice change for the IF campaign. It's nice to have actual room to maneuver on the map without wall to wall troops.

'Classical Indian' covers all the Indian lists in this context (copied and pasted the army list from Slitherine ;) ).

With regard to points, my one concern is that some armies just don't work much under 400 points. That said, I think it would be cool to have differing points totals in different seasons so we can experiment in the 300 - 400 range without tying ourselves into one or the other until we have a happy medium - with each player having a larger potential pool of armies, there shouldn't be too much problem.

Yep im in for the IF campaign. As for the amount of points per army i find 500 to be a happy medium but 400 to start with would be ok with me.

I'm in for the IF campaign. I actually prefer 600 points but I'll give the lower point armies a try. I think the idea of having lower point armies for only certain seasons sounds like a good compromize.

In the Thrakesion province, the once and future emperor decides that it will also be fun to play with the Kretens. A mercenary horde has been dispatched to enjoy their company.
