Turns out, it's a lot harder to attack across a stream with camel lancers than I thought. ;-)

SLancaster Roman 199-106 BC with Greek 227-146 BC allies defeated TomoeGozen Achaemenid Persian 480-461 BC. 61-40.

TomoeGozen fought bravily. In the chat he said he has been struggling with this army. I made the comment that the Persians are more of a Biblical army. Tough to use in Classical, especially in the higher divisions. It reminds me of trying to use a Warband army in Late Antiquity.. Thanks for the game!

i was due some lady luck against Harvey, and i got some this time! the lowly camel corps achieved pyramid status, turning a rout pursuit action into a multi unit flanking-breaking chain reaction to wipe out an entire flank.

Karvon - Arab (Conquest) 638-684 AD defeated kraff - Bulgar (Danube) 852-1018 AD with Pecheneg 850-1122 AD allies 60-37 for a 4-0 win.

The battle was joined in hilly wooded river valley, hardly friendly ground for the Bulgar hordes. A deep stream ran across the middle of the field with a large steep hill looking down on it in my center with a gentler ridge continuing off to my left and wrapping back along the left edge. Some woods were nestled along the backside of the ridge masking off my left. A small gentle hill looked down on the stream on my far right flank. A sizeable woods filled most of the space left of that hill running towards the steep central hill, leaving just a small gap, a few elements wide. A couple of smaller woods fell along my right rear edge, masking that flank fairly well. Across the stream, a long gentle ridge ran across my left stopping short of the central area with a small gentle hill facing the steep one. The area to the right of that was mostly open ground immediately beyond the stream. A couple of large woods fell along enemy edge on my left, effectively masking that flank. The enemy's left was partially covered by a large woods bordered by some rough ground. A lone hamlet lying in his center right a bow shot from from the neighboring woods could provide an anchor to a defensive line drawn to the woods and rough to his left.

The Bulgars can opt for a fairly large shield wall supported by bow, or go with an all horse archer forces, but given the constricting terrain, I expected a shield wall of some size supported by mixed horse. I also expected him to hold well back from the stream with his infantry to give his cavalry more time and room to harass my advancing infantry and weaken them up before they could reach his foot. I figured this line would run in the center somewhere between the hamlet and the rough ground and woods on his left.

With this all in mind, I opted for an infantry heavy list based around 8 spears, a Dailami, 3 Beduoin and 3 massed bow supported by half a dozen LF, a couple of LH, the minimum 4 Moslem lancers supported by a pair of camels and a pair of Beduoin lancers. I split the spear with half on each side of the steep hill in the center. the bow deployed hidden behind the hill. The Dailami and Beduoin foot deployed hidden in the woods on my right. Half of the cavalry were hidden behind the woods on the right and the other were deployed hidden behind the hills on the left. The camels deployed behind the steep hill behind the bow. The light foot deployed to screen the advance across the steep hill. If the Bulgars were aggressive, my forces were within easy reach of a very strong defensive position along and overlooking the stream. If they held back, then I would push forward in the center with my spears and on the right with medium foot to envelop his line through the rough and woods on his left. My horse and camels would work to keep his horse off my flanks.

The Bulgars deployed mixed infantry force of bow and shield wall about were I expected between the hamlet and woods. Half a dozen horse archers were deployed on their right in open plains. A couple of lancers and horse archers were in reserve near the infantry. A few lights screened their infantry.

We began moving our troops forward to a defensive line overlooking the stream and paused to see what the Bulgars intentions were. They advanced their horse archers and lights to skirmish but their infantry held back, so we began our planned assault; our spears shifted right as they crossed the stream and advanced over the hill and the open plains on the right. Our medium foot advanced towards the rough and the woods on the enemy left. Our cavalry and camels shifted right behind the advancing spear to guard the flanks and support the advancing mediums. Our light screen shifted right to lead the way towards the rough and woods.

The Bulgars attempted to delay us with a mix of their cavalry and lights. This led to some skirmishing, but we mostly drove them back with charges and kept moving. We dropped by spears on the left to cover our flank as the rest of the infantry moved forward and our mediums and supported by some cavalry cleared the woods and turned enemy left. Our spears charged home against his shield wall and bow line and began grinding them down.

The Bulgar cavalry reformed and converged on lone spear or cavalry covering our flanks and, with time, destroyed a few of these, but then were drawn off in pursuit for a turn or more. In the meantime, our flanking force swept around the woods and took the Bulgar center in the rear and destroyed this before his cavalry could return and save them.
