This year was more bloody than previous years. Many more games finished

Medieval was over two-thirds 67%
Ancient well over a half 57%

More games usually finish in medieval but I think the overall average games finishing has always been less than half and more like a third in ancient

Small tables or dropped game????
What ever happened its good for the game.

Gentlemen,
I think it is wrong to slag off anyone who wins any tournament, especially one as prestigious as Britcon, they can't get there by lucky die and/or lucky army choice alone.
So I say congratulations to both mr Evans and mr Ruddock, well done. I hope one day to play both of you, expecting to get done over in both games, but to enjoy the experience of having played 2 of the masters of FOG,
Andre

Andre has recently been returned to the asylum from whence he came.

Though I cannot guarantee he will not slip his guards and get on line again in the near future.

If you were there for the conversations I have with Messrs Ruddock (and Evans) face to face you could understand the vein this is supposed to be taken in.
You may think he is a good player but none of us are willing to say it
Because he is a jammy b'stard

I would like to congratulate Mr Evans most heartily on his well deserved win.

(Andre, that do it for you?)

It's akin to casting pearls to swine.

You tell people how to win and what army to use and all they do is claim it was lucky dice or lucky match-ups.

That's why they never get better :)

Anyone can win an occasional game based on throwing good dice, maybe they could even win a tournament. But Dave's record (according to the Slitherine rankings,) includes 7 first places, 6 seconds, and 8 thirds. Not all those tournaments were made up of Dave and a bunch of bunnies. Actually I don't thunk any of them were.
That's not luck alone.

Your first mistake in this thread

You will not win a tournament if you throw bad dice
But Dave's record (according to the Slitherine rankings,)
Which Dave produces

Some may say Dave is a good player, some would never dream of saying it. He wins a lot of tournaments, but only since I told him "You need more lancers Dave". So he must be lucky as he wins more games than me now. Except when we play each other.

What did you say to me about Graham's match ups Dave?

Just to confirm - I don't produce the slitherine rankings, just the bhgs ones.

But you provide all the Brit competition scores to Martin for the Slitherine rankings

Good work Dave - luck favours the brave.

Too true. Check out FoGR - Alasdair won his game vs RBS by some similar outrageous good fortune. Sometimes you just have to go for it.

Didn't in our game Muz.

Depends if you count standing in the open brave or foolhardy though

Right, "submarining" has been explained to me. Why the reference to "bunnies"?

Vespasian,
when people first start hunting they normally hunt rabbits (bunnies) as they are small, easy to kill, easy to find, stand still if you shine a strong light on them, and they don't fight back. A much better idea than going straight for tigers or grizzly bears.
In wargaming tournaments someone who is easy to beat, often a beginner, is sometimes termed a bunny. As you get as many points from beating a bunny as from beating a tough player (probably more as they may not take many points of you), they are highly sought after as opponents.

Very good Andre. Now how about tackling "gibbon surfing"? :|

Stephen,

as I've never used "Gibbon surfing" ,and am very unlikely to at this late stage in my life, I will leave it to you to explain it fully for the un-initiated,

Submarine hide underwater... bunnies hide in the ground!

Yes, most true, and clearly some of both. I had the opportunity to sit in terrain against the knights of Bob A, and set up that way, but having been emboldened by a good game against Graham B decided not to waste a game looking for a draw. End result was 5/20 to Bob but we had a really good game. Likewise I didn't want to lose the opportunity to play against a good player such as you by sitting somewhere safe - bugger the rankings points lost.

Just returning to Australia now, and already trying to plan another venture - might be around a family trip to USA next year.

A GB, ANZAC 1, 2 in the US teams would be good. Who would they take to Lisbon?
