Unfortunately, it does not handles uneven numbers of players very well, the last uneven numbered player gets 0pts and stays in last position unless someone else gets 0 points in the round.
I have worked around this by adding a dummy player called 'Bye' to the draw and fix that game to get 25 points (giving 'Bye' 0 points so that the in the next round the lowest scoring player gets the bye), then manually go back through the rounds at the end of the competition to adjust all players that played 'Bye' to be the average of the scores vs real opponents. Would be nice if the software did this automatically.

Well, I put it on my to do list for the next version. (in August I shall have sufficent time, with chance I'll find some spare time earlier)
However, there are some decisions to make:
Since playing versus the dummy means not playing at all in this round, I think no one should play the dummy twice.
But should
a) always the last player play the dummy, or
b) someone in the middle of the tournament or
c) should it be determined completely by random?
For the rating of the game:
Should the game versus the dummy:
a) Bring 10 point as a resultless draw or
b) be the average of the points gained by players in this round or
c) don't bring any points at all?
Your opinions are wellcome, please let me know what you think.
(twice option a) would be the easiest to implement

I think it should be determined completly random.
As for the rating, on option might be to just adapt the BHGS rule for a player whose opponent is missing the match as a default.
Players must be present and ready to start the match at the appointed time. Where a player has a reasonable excuse for arriving late the match start will be delayed by up to 30 minutes. After which time the effected player will be awarded a bye. No player will be awarded more than one bye for any reason. A bye will carry 16 points for the duration of the tournament and will be adjusted at the end by inserting instead the average of the players real results, with a minimum of 16 points.

Choosing for the dummy should be random.
If the players are all going to have the same number of "real" opponents; then they should get 0 points for the bye.
If the bye round counts, then they get either the rounds average of "10"; whichever would penalize them less.

Well, that is the rounds average in all cases then, since all games produce either an average of 10 points (no army break or a simultaneous army break) or an average of 12.5 points (one army broken). So, the average of all games of a round can never be worse than 10 points.

I am looking to use this software for the Tournament at the UK Games Expo.
I am having a few problems trying to create pools.
I need to have pools to prevent husband and wife matchups for a start and would like to avoid club on club matches as well.

What's the issue? We never used pools at Shieldwall but when I tested them out it seemed to work ok.

The problem was I hadn't figured that I had to create the pool before I added people to it.
I think I have sorted that bit now.

Ah
Not sure a persion can be in two clubs though so whilst spouses may avoid each other they'd still meet clubmates.

A player can indeed only be in one pool but you can adjust pools as the tournament progresses so you start with spouses and clubmates in a pool and then drop the clubmates but leave the spouses.

Tell me that isn't true Hammy! (and I'll direct you to a few threads)

A good idea but alas not one that will be of much use at the Games Expo

I am the umpire so won't get to the bar early anyway.
I do admit though that I prefer doubles where you can send your partner to the bar to get the beer in. Ideally when soemone else from the club is driving so I can drink on the Sunday as well
Did I mention that beer really helps increase the pleasure of a gaming weekend

I am now getting the hang of the software but I still can't find a way to present a nice set of results including the usual things we post in the Hall of Honour
Player name, club, army, round by round score, round by round opponent and total are probably the minmum needed.
The other thing that would be nice would be if there was an option to show the round by round score rounded so that there is nothing after the decimal. I am not really a big fan or 20.7 to 4.3 scores. 21-4 sounds much cleaner.

Well, basicly the software is written to handle a tournament, not to fill the hall of fame, but:
What excactly are you missing? I think all the infomation you mentioned is in there, except for the club which I did not think would be necessary except for building a pool, which you can.

The scoring is build according to the scoring sheet from the official homepage:
http://www.fieldofglory.com/competition/scoresheet.html
It uses the same precision. Is it really that important?

I agree that the information is there but it is a bit of a pain to have to reformat it. For a small tournament it wouldn't be too much trouble but for large events it is a pain and easy to get things wrong. Having just realised I can't even cut and paste results from a round as a whole it means getting a full set of results in a readable format is going to be really hard work.

I appreciate that but when someone asks you what your score was 14-6 sounds so much better than 14.2-5.8 It also makes the scoring seem more complex than it really is.

I could include a export function, giving you a csv file that you could read with a spreatsheet programm like open office.org calc or ms excel.
Would that help?

Well, this would mean including a further option allowing to choose the precision yourself. I'm not quite happy with this, since it means more work for just cosmetic reasons.
I'll think about that.

A CSV file would be great. Don't worry too much about the rounding thing.
I have managed to get somewhere reformatting a set of results but so far it has taken half an hour and I guess it will take nearly an hour to do one comp

Ok, I will give you the same information as in

As long as the next version isn't finished, you could just keep the xml save file and generate the csv with the new programm version as soon as it is finished.

That would be superb. Thanks.
I have sorted out the results I needed to do now. They were from the comp in Perth (Scotland) and had 18 players. With a bit of creative cut and paste (you can cut and paste from the round by round scores and overall scores but not the list of players) and some vlookup formulas I managed to get it done in a reasonable amount of time.

O.k., I was trying to avoid my regular work today, so the export function is finished

. I just need to adjust the translation modul.
Will be ready for download sunday or monday. So don't do to much by hand.
(The dummy will take some time though since this a bigger bunch of work.)

Hm, did they use the software for the tournament? (I'm just curious, wondering whether any one outside germany is using it.)

Very interessting, it shouldn't be that way. I'll have a look at that too.
