I didn't realize that. I was aware that the Successors got their war elephants from India. I wonder if it was just a matter of the Mediterranean-area Empires not having come into contact with the Bush Elephant?
It can't be that they were more difficult to domesticate, when one considers all the trained elephants that have performed in circuses over the years. I wonder if any of the African Kingdoms ever used them.

The supreme irony of this is that about half the portrayals of war elephants in art and games seem to be based on the familiar African Elephant.

I expect circus elephants are all of the Indian species.
