When I hit the 'submit' button, I had a premonition that I was giving you a straight line!
Thanks, Nik.

I bit the bullet and ordered a pack of the elusive AEA17 Essex Sudanese Ghulam, reasoning that if they were mostly naked guys I'd only be out one pack worth. (A big leap for me.) I tossed this one in with an order for some CRU6 and some Byzantine cavalry. Since Wargames carries Essex reliably here in the US again, I can order a reasonably small number of packs without paying premium freight & markup from England.
My pile of shame groweth.
Here's a (bit fuzzy) photo:
It turns out they are sort of what I'd hoped--even without the cool hourglass shield from the Osprey illustration. They look very much like the 'Arabia warriors' from Old Glory that Dragon Painting Service has had online for a while--which I suspect are what are marketed as Sudanese Ghulams, but there isn't a photo on the OG site.

Hm, should have thought of it earlier, I guess below is what you were looking for? It has a mix of AEA17 and others from that range.

Thanks Greuthungi! I actually purchased some and painted them, then posted here--but that post was apparently a casualty of the great message lobotomy. Here's my version, redux...

I really like how these figures turned out and look forward to either commanding them or facing them across the table
