Thanks to the team for another excellent event.

My Ancient Britons had a great deal of feeling fragile but viable throughout - alebit that fragile won that contest in the end.

4 excellent games and particularly good to be playing a 13 year old I hadn't met before over the weekend. The more the better.

Can I also say a big thank-you on behalf of the organisers to everyone who came to Warfare this year and made it such an enjoyable competition to run. Over all the competitions this year we had about a 20% increase in competitors - with the result that the bowling hall was the noisiest I can remember it for several years.

The FOG competitions all seemed to be played in excellent spirit - lots and lots of fun being had, judging from the oohs and aahs and post-match laughter going on around me (umpire's "booth" was in the thick of the FOG games). Especial thanks are due to Simon for volunteering to umpire as well as float - in the end I was delighted to be able to fit him into his first choice event. Sadly, we ended up having a bye in the 25mm, but Ric Davey made maximum use of his bye score (doubling his second round 24-1 score!) and Richard Jeffrey-Cook was kind enough to entertain me by giving me an introduction to FOG during his second-round bye. I'm pleased to report that Richard's weekend recovered sufficiently to bring him from bottom-place at the end of round 1 to top half-finisher on Sunday evening.

Full results will be posted on the BHGS and WAR sites as soon as I can organise them, but the winners were:-

Thank you so much for organising Tim - all smooth as silk! The bowling hall did indeed seem to be well populated this year. It was particularly good to have the demo games up near the entrance - we could have a quick look in passing and the public could wander into the hall and see something better than our little bits of felt!

Already diarised for next year - will try to do better! 4 great games again though - one year in and still haven't had a bad FOG game yet - long may that continue.

I would like to add a plug for the rules as well as a general comment on the way the games were played. My games had no umpire calls, in fact I cannot remember anything much that was even disputed. Not only that, I did not notice any umpire calls at adjacent games.

Some of this may be due to the fact that the Hussites were getting a bit of a pasting and my opponents were generally too pleased to argue. However, having now tried two variants of the Hussite army and been unsuccessful with both, I am going to persist and try another army design.

That summed it up rather well. Somewhat annoyingly my Light Horse got caught twice whilst at 4" distance the last time was when the effing baggage was just behind so that cost me the game.

At that point Phil had taken 10 Attrition Points (out of 12) with one BG of cavalry lancers in combat against Cataphracts, they were disrupted and had lost a base and I had three further dice from overlaps from LH and LF. So it was six dice (three at double minus, three at plus re-rolling one's and two's) against two at minus. When this BG broke then Phils army was mine

I was rather disappointed to say the least

Firstly, thanks to all the organisers of Warfare 2008, it was a superb do all round!

Secondly, thanks to all opponents in the FoG 25mm comp for putting up with relative inexperience both with the rules and with the conventions of competition play in general.

Thirdly, ( this is sounding like the Oscars...) thanks to my four opponents, Bryan, Don, Ken and Ric! All the games were interesting and played in a really good spirit.

I think I only beat Bryan so heavily due to a mounted break-off being forgotten by both of us. Don would surely have defeated me if only any of his shooty horse had been able to hit anything at all; the dice-god deserted him big-time! Ken could have escaped such a heavy defeat if only his CMT dice had been above a 3 or 4.

My defeat by Ric, the winner of the 25mm competition, was fully deserved; his skirmishing right flank, although driven back with minimal losses to my forces, skilfully delayed my troops long enough to save his camp. His combined cataphract/legionary assault on my main battle-line broke through, and he killed Scipio on a 12 just when he needed it most (..cue for a song? ). My own errors in throwing away a triarii BG and half a legion by charging precipitously only helped Ric to what was already a well-orchestrated win, with me learning a couple of new rule points as I gathered the remnants of my army into the toolbox.

I look forward to coming back next year and to trying to find opportunities to take part in more competitions.

There are 25mm comps scheduled next year in Plymouth in January, Oxford in March and Ascot in April, Illford in July, Manchester in August, High Wycombe in October and Reading in November. There is likely to be at least one in Clevedon as well.

There will be more 15mm comps than this as at present the doubles is 15mm only.

I think it is just waiting on Matt to get them up on the BHGS site.

I would like to add my than to the organisers of Warfare. I must give a speacial mention to Tim who dealt with all the late army list.

I'd also like to thank my opponents for some great games. FOG seems to bring the best out of the ancients competition crowd.
