unit received the hero star in the picture. unit received the cross - the cross in the picture.

The star represented in the unit on the battlefield, tells you that it has an assigned hero, has nothing to do with the cross of merit of the unit.
That part of the mod, was taken from the DMP Panzer Corps Ostfront.
