Its equal to escort mechanic of PC i think, not too stupid
Escort fighter can retaliate multiple times (even more fighter just cause a little more damage), otherwise PC escorts just cause one each fighter (while provide more defense).
Still, we cant use bomber before owning the sky, its historical

The current "
Fighter Escort" mechanism satisfies me.
It’s like a
surprise effect: the enemy fighter attacks first by surprise the bomber and the friend escort retaliates after.
Maybe I could understand this if attacking unit has the Interceptor trait but those fighter traits do not appear to make any difference in actual gameplay.

It is not like PC at all. Here is example from both games. In PC attacking escorted bombers results in large penalty. In OOB attacking escorted bombers provides
no protection and hardly any penalty for attacker. In this example the attacker lost 1 additional strength point compared to attacking unescorted bomber. Does OOB have to be the same as PC? No and I'm glad it's not. But in this example PC approach makes more sense to me at least. The unit being attacked could/should still take some loss but the presence of fighter escort should provide a defensive boost.
