numerous anarchy charges by their cataphracts forced the sasanians to commit most of their cavalry into a costly battle against the higher quality byzantine heavies at the bottom of the hill. but at the rear the byzantine infantry was unable to set up a proper defensive line and was overwhelmed.

The Syrian first line was smashed, but they caused enough casualties on the Kufans to make things easier for the second line. I was lucky with rallying; quite a number of routed Syrian units recovered in the course of their trek south. After many turns of inconclusive skirmishing, Syrians assaulted the Kufan left, and it had just started to collapse as the game ended.

the kufan infantry steamroller was too much. the syrian cavalry's attempts to bolster the wings on their infantry line was not successful.

the byzantine left was forced off the field with heavy losses while the main force on the right fought its way forward with enough success to secure the points for a win before being crushed between the three gorges in the next few turns.

the arabs did not oppose the byzantines on the left until the arrival of the reinforcements. they had to play catchup in terms of points but in the later stages, the better quality arab infantry just overwhelmed the byzantine infantry. also, the byzantines did not seek to withdraw on their left apart from the levies. they did tie up the arab right the whole game but at the cost of losing virtually the whole wing.

the arabs engaged the nubians on all fronts and were just overwhelmed by nubian numbers.

Tough bruiser, the left wing Byzantines managed to get some of their troops exited behind the marker, but the Muslims put up a fantastic defence in the centre and right...if the game had continued, the byzantine line would be all finished.....

they where able to work there way around behind the vulnerable immobile units and victory camps.

Heavy fighting in front of the oasis. for the arabs it came down to micro managing the details to get rear attacks on the mass of sassanian cataphracts and avoiding getting hit by dailamis at crucial junctures.

this is my last game. thanks to all my worthy opponents for some great gaming. as usual, i've learned a lot from solving the problems posed by the different tactical situations that the scenarios are designed to highlight. on the historical plane, i think this series give a fairly accurate representation of warfare in the 7th century.

'lords of history 7: mongols and mamluks' will follow shortly, featuring the most advanced scenario designs seen yet.

absolutely. start solitaire on the 'mongols and mamluks' set, it's crucial one gets the first turn planned out in advance.

Apologies for taking a long time to post results. Going to roll them out now. My only uncompleted games are the two with davouthojo - I'm waiting for him to do his turn in both. (It's been a while!) Both games are about in the middle if I recall correctly.

Londo (Nubians) 49/42 - batesmotel (Arabs) 24/58

Nubians set up a defensive position on the ridge line on their right, centred around the C-in-C, which withstood ferocious Arab attacks. Meanwhile the Arab forces in the oasis were shot up and destroyed.

Londo (Arabs) 27/45 - batesmotel (Sasanians) 56/53

The Persian cataphracts attempted to work their way around the Arab left flank, but were blocked by Arab infantry. The Persian C-in-C attacked with his Dailami guardsmen, but could not penetrate the Arab spear wall. Meanwhile, the Arabs attacked the centre of the Persian line where there was a gap in the earthworks; the levy spearmen and archers there were soon routed.
