After using polarisSector.exe -design to edit ship cells, the ship designer keeps crashing when trying to save after changing standard cells to weapon cells. Anyone know why?

Probably you must restart the design, delete everything the cells and to start again all the design.

Are you editing a default design or have you created one for this hull? We must difference the design and the hull or it will be a mess.

Ok I completely reinstalled the game including deleting the folder in My games, this is what I did in order,

I re-installed the game
Loaded up FreeCommanderFX and entered polarisSector.exe -extract all
Then I entered polarisSector.exe -design to load the ship design program
Then I hit shift + 6 to go to the human ships and scrolled down to the battleship
Selected New prototype and gave me a default name of England then I hit OK
Selected Deck 1 and hit shift + 3 to select weapon cells
I changed a bunch of cells going down the ship from standard to weapons cells
Press S to save
Crash

So I am guessing it's hull?

You should be to make this changes as a new mod, the best would be edit the ShipBody.all and chance the name from the cells for the units edited by you. Check the pdf about how create a mod folder. If you put your ShipBody.all edited and your new cells into it, the game will load them.

Yes, it is possible. First just you need extract all the compressed files from the game, check the guide in the first answer from this thread. After it, you can edit all the images files extracted without problems. Most of them are png files.

I literally just bought the game yesterday and I'm getting increasingly excited about the modding capabilities.

I always have a lot of ideas that due to lack of coding skills can't be implemented :D

The modding on this seems a lot friendlier so I'll be looking in to it more.

Anyway, to my questions:

1. ) The one biggest thing I dislike is the number of planets per system, I'm playing on 900 stars and each has 3 planets, is there a way to randomise number of planets to say 2-9 per star? I noticed you can change / add planets to a system manually.

2.) Events / exploration options. Is there a way to make more events happen? Even on expored planets / stars?

If you know how you can not make them, it is very good. ;)

Good questions. I do not know what is the limit of planets per system. You can try it if you edit a scenario. Check this https://youtu.be/-lozrimoM_U

The events are in the rq files but I have not explored it. I limit my mod to convert the game in something similar to the old SW Rebellion. Other point is how I do not try too many new things because I want finish my mod before the summer and not at ten years. I have mods from ten years old of work.

Currently the hardcoded maximum is 6 planets per star.

To influence the automatic generation, you can play with PlanType.ini file.

Thanks for the replies, I'll hopefully take a look at what I can do in the next couple of weeks, 1 last question (for now).

Is it possible to add in new research / what it affects and what it takes to get it? I would like to look at making planet research better, e.g. expanding number of planet slots, unlocking different types of buildings.

One thing I liked most on GalCiv 2 was that certain research made planets much better even in early game.

About your question Proeliumerus, Ufnv told me this.
Adding a new research is quite simple. Just add a new entry to the tech_t.all, giving it a new science ID. One also needs to define the parents of the research, this defines how to get it.

Thanks for sharing that with us, I looked into the rtq.text file and noticed the language isn't English that related to Lang or w/e that is. I been trying to change things around in
my game so I can be more happy with it, since they left out an options for users to change race/specie names as well symbol or avatar. So I got my picture up and running and
I am trying to figure out how to get the race name to change. The file you uploaded, I found it, but couldn't figure out how to make this work, otherwise it would have messed
up the Lang that is in Russia Language and need it in English.

Too bad they didn't put all these texts in LANG folders, least make it for .xml format so it would be easier to mod them. So how can I make this to work? Already unpack it, just
need to get the race name changed.

Been trying to set it up like I did in Distant Worlds, like playing my Aliens!
