Before the game was frozen, have you continued a previously saved game by accessing it from load menu or the freeze happened during an uninterrupted match (without screen transition to the menu or saving/loading the match).

Yes. If you look at the save sets, you will see three saves (one per axis general) from 06:00, 16th December 1944. I start from one of these to avoid repeating the surprise attack.
