This answer is very very good, now it is quite clear in my mind.

This particular point "LF in brush, enclosed fields, vineyards and marsh can see out normally. Troops inside a gully can see out normally."
Was the one creating concern for me since the visibility distance for LF in certain conditions was different and hence it would create strange situations like light foot not being able to look outside of brush since they could hide in it..

all in all I think this answer clears the questions for me :) now I need to put is in a post it and add it to the relevant section of the rules...

thanks to the three headed monster ( the authors :) )

cheers
Francisco

"When shooting, the total distance from the nearest front corner or part of the front edge of each shooting file to the target must be within the specified distance." seems to make it necessary to clarify that it applies only to those terrain and the current rule "If they shoot, however, they become visible to the battle group shot at, who can then shoot back." applies only to LF not in Forest, Plantation and Villages.

I'd also be interested if they are going to add "Troops beyond a Village cannot be seen." to make it consistent with Forest and Plantation if that is intended.

Don't understand this point. It applies whenever a visibility range is specified.

Visibility ranges are mutual anyway in these terrains.

It isn't.

Thanks Richard!

My issue is that the rule that says "If they shoot, however, they become visible to the battle group shot at, who can then shoot back." allows the whole shot-at BG to spot the shooter and shoot back even if some of its bases are outside normal visibility range. It sounds like you may mean just that files shot at can automatically see the shooters.

Ah I see. Yes, that does need to be addressed.

Yes it does, but if a BG betrays its position by shooting, the BG being shot at should be able to shoot in the direction of the shooting, if the bases are in arc, even if some of the bases can't "see" the enemy, IMO anyway!

Aye, aim at the smoke and muzzle flashes!

Err, never mind.

Latest version for the FAQ:
How far can troops inside a forest see (or shoot) out?

The visibility distances specified for plantations, forests and villages apply equally to
- troops outside looking in at troops wholly inside
- troops wholly inside looking out
- troops whole inside looking at other troops wholly inside.

When shooting, the total distance from the nearest front corner or part of the front edge of each shooting file to the target must be within the specified distance. (It doesn't matter how much of the distance is in the terrain).

LF in brush, enclosed fields, vineyards and marsh can see out normally. When they shoot they become visible to all bases of the battle group they are shooting at.

So a BG wholly within a forest whose friends break greater than 2MU but <=3MU away do not test as they have not seen it??
