Mark, The panopy of Nigerian arms sounds especially interesting.

I know that the Hausa City-States went to a lot of effort to provide armor mail shirts for their regular troops.

i hope the hausaland photos are as colorful as i remember. Makes you want to build the army.

Richard young, when you mentioned the SOuth African empire, i ssume that you are referring to the Empire of Monomotapa. it does fall into the time frame of up until 1500 since it was formed in the 1400s.

I have no excuse for leaving it out oif my work, other than not having the sources in my library to create proper army types.

This would be a neat army to put into the 'Lost Scrolls' project.

Great Zimbabwe was succeeded by the Monomotapa and Rozwi kingdoms sometime in the 15th century. I'm referring to Great Zimbabwe as their successors didn't really become established as powerful kingdoms until after 1500, at least that's what I've read. Of course there is so little info about Great Zimbabwe military that most of what I could find is inferred from later accounts of battles as described by the Portuguese.
