Auto safe would be a life saver. Like in my case i played like two hours in a difficult defence mission and was finally after several attempts winning and only two turns left. Then the game froze.

Unfortunately no auto save. However, especially on the higher difficulties or if going for all the objectives the best habit (if you are afraid of losing progress) is to make a save either every turn or every few turns. Not too hard if you get into the habit of doing it.
