V65 doesn't actually follow a timeline per se, its more of a micro simulation encompassing elements of the whole war , like Vietnamisation (training South Vietnamese army) and political support from the USA. These elements are represented in the game, just as the Tet offensive is. In V65 when the Hearts and Minds of the local population drops a few turns consecutively, the NVA launch an offensive, which includes armor (PT-76).

The prototype is no longer available to download... is there still some way to get it?

The prototype which was available really did not reflect the current state of the game, as both graphics and gameplay (both in terms of ease of use and realism) have seen significant improvements since then, long before we even announced beta recruitment, so we did not want it to give a false idea about the finished product.
