This last post describes the situation in the game apart from the fact the troops in the gulley were archers, and i Just thought there was something in visibility rules I couldn't find. Cheers Dino

So back to the OP:
1. Even though the spear are too far from the gully to see into it, when the bow shoot from the gully they reveal their position and count as being seen by the spear
2. If the bow can see the spear (because they shot at them) they can charge the flank of the spear in their next move. Therefore the spear have a threatened flank and take a minus one
