I disagree. If two rules are written differently, it's a reasonable clue that the authors intended them to have different meanings.
But the rules were written by committee. So people are going to write the same things in different ways. 'If they could contact elephants' means if elephants could intercept elephants could be contacted.

It's a tough call, made tougher by the wording of the previous bullet, but I think the rule has to be taken at face value. Hence if the elephants can intercept, the shock cavalry don't have to test not to charge.

Does that also include Commanders mounted on Elephants (where expressly permitted by their army list) - do I catch the aroma of melting Bree?

One would not end "in contact" with friendly elephants because you would drop back bases to avoid or burst thorugh which would result in elephants moving behind so not "ending in" contact. Now the fun question is that if you would step forward into elephants must you role?

IMO, if the charge could end in contact with elephants it must be voluntary.
So a kinked column wishing to charge where it would end in contact with friendly elephants will never charge (until unkinked) Trap some Rajput lancer there

You can end in side or rear edge contact,if they are burst through they will only move back to make room, therefore you will be in rear contact.Side edge is fairly obvious

Obviously no.
And why do you want melt the town of Bree just outside the shire? Are you an agent of Sauron?
