The crux of the matter is that the base lost has to be replaced by another base in the BG, if available. The only base eligible to replace the lost base is the overlapping base. This creates a gap between the base facing the HF and the base facing the LH. one base must be slid sideways until in contact with the other.

IMO the base fighting the LH must be a front rank base, so not eligible to be used to replace the lost base. If it was the originally lost base, it would have to be replaced. Either way, I don't think the 2nd picture would be a legal end-state.
I do NOT have a problem with the way the base was removed. It was a front rank base and as both opponants scored equal hits then eligable to be removed. There is no moving of bases to remain in contact as a couple of correspondents have suggested as far as I can see in the rules.

Straight ahead does not contact anything.
