A question for Dan A.: Does this "New" FoG mean that dropped modules such as Swifter than Eagles will eventually be done?

For me too...

Actually, if Wolves From The Sea is released in June of this year (as per the release date on its product page), I will be a happy man!

Hmm, initial posting made - now silence. Can we get SOME answers to questions posted here? Is this new version of FoG version 1 family going to take years to build or more like six months? Having an answer to that will give us a rough time frame as to when Wolves and other modules will be ready to go out.

Well, I expect the "silence" is due to the Slitherine people taking a well-deserved Easter break. My guess is that cothyso and the new development team are not exactly sure how long the process of re-writing the whole game in Unity will take at this stage. Obviously we would all like it to be done as quickly as possible, but I think it is important that they get things absolutely right so the game is "re-launched" on very secure foundations. We definitely don't want to have a rushed and botched job done with it - so we get all sorts of problems when the new system is introduced.

So I would think we are definitely talking about the second half of the year, maybe in the autumn before "Wolves From The Sea" appears. Slitherine have also indicated there may be something else for us before then - maybe it will be a patch with a new feature included within it? But although the current delay is a little bit frustrating for those of us who really are keen to get their hands on the next two expansions, I really do feel a lot more positive about the future of FOG now than I have done at any other time in the past year. If you read cothyso's initial post again, you can already clearly see an outline for the future development of the game - and in cothyso, we have someone who has both played the game and has knowledge of the issues raised by many players over the las year or so.

Some people that I play against tell me that this game is dying. I don't believe that at all - in fact, I think the game's future is looking really healthy now.

Read the announcement from Iain M., pretty much spells it out:

3-4 months (optimisticlly) to convert over to unity, maybe some minor tweeks, then they will release the 2 expansions that are/were already in development ( wolves/oath) then who knows!

Sorry - missed that in the text. And that is an estimate ... might be longer and knowing how programming goes probably more like 4-6 months.

That was exactly my feeling during last year's stagnation - several expansions were published but there were no basic enhancements of the game itself. After 2 years it still feels kind of beta, unfinished, and looks that way too. I really hope that the new developers will succeed in converting this already good game into a great one. That would be worth the waiting.

I was hoping it would have the "base" look of its miniature rules. That is with individual bases just like a miniatures game. But I really like the artwork. The lack of terrain, the oddball combat results, that can all be corrected. I enjoy playing the game even if it does have issues. I like the interface and the ease of play (well, I do wish that it was a "windowed" game but ...). For me to learn a new interface every time I pick up a new software title means spending quite a bit of time getting used to it. FoG is simple to learn. For what its worth I def. got my money's worth. Looking forward to seeing what they do in the future now that they have a new team.

You can run it in a window. Bring up the command line and enter "full-screen 0". The command line is triggered on my keyboard by the tilde key in the upper left corner. This is a French keyboard, alas, so it may be differently located on yours.

Tilda (~) works on all keyboards as far as I know. For keyboards without `, some other key is probably available.

Hello guys!

We're not dead, we're working. You can not even grasp the enormity of the task we're engaged on, re-creating the whole game, with everything which was added over all the addons, and all of that in just a few months..

The timeframe we're aiming at is the one Iain mentioned before. It might take more, considering the complexity of the game. 3-4 months is nothing when you think about this. Please consider we're not just re-creating it (from the scratch), we're also making a basis on which we're planning to extend the game for the future addons and an eventual 2.0 version. And we're also adding new features (like, for example, separating the maps from the scenario data, or the GUI improvements; just to name two of them).

Also, you should not forget that there will be a battlepack release in the mean time (using the old engine), which will give you something to play in-between. All the current existing addons (including the future battle pack one, and probably another new addon) will be ported on the new version. Of course, they will only be accessible for the ones who have bought them (exactly as with the current system).

And.. there will be a beta too :)

Not only because of NewRoSoft's involvement etc., but also because guys like you create new scenarios on a regular basis.

Indeed, the future is looking good. :D

Don't want to jump the gun here, but will this new version and battle packs be free for those of us who have purchased the originals or will we have to buy the new versions?
