I have both the Matrix Steel Panthers series and grand campaigns and the Shrapnel Games version. Both have distinct advantages and disadvantages, and both are definitely classics - you'll seldom encounter games with such depth from a strategic and tactical viewpoint. I find myself playing the Shrapnel version more frequently, largely because of the improved resolution and for some because of the way the AI handles ops fire, etc., but you can't go wrong with these games. Enjoy!
That said, I've only been a part of the Team Assault beta for a few days and it is rapidly becoming a favorite; it has potential to be beautiful! In fact, I would give my left arm to be a part of the team helping to provide new maps and content for this game engine. There is potential here for a masterpiece in terms of storytelling in a campaign environment and of course for multiplayer play. We could make this game a long-term love affair for the PBEM wargame community!
