I totally agree..The Lost Battaliont was a decent flick considering films made of WWI are few and far between circa after 1990.

That was a really good movie, sadly the Colonel in real life never got over the horrors/guilt of that battle and commited suicide in the 30's

Add "Capitaine Conan" French film set on the WW 1 Bulgarian front and then fighting the Bolsheviks

While we wait, why not watch the best documentary, IMO, so far about WWI air War. I've imported my edition from Australia.

I'm watching these now. Very good documentary indeed. Happy to notice that so far there's not much information I didn't know yet For example the Albatros' plywood fusilage, being translated into the game with the "Reinforced Fusilage" technology. The resulting Fighter unit icon for the Germans is - indeed - an Albatros

I suppose we'll have in the game family units. In case of air, will we have 3 different families like Fighter, Bomber and Reconnaissance?

That does look like a good one to see. In fact it is now in position 1 of my Netflix list.

Just thought I would let you know that I took your advice and watched Red Baron this weekend. I enjoyed it immensely.

I thought it was a well done movie with excellent aerial combat scenes. The historical feel to it was appreciated, although I have no idea how accurate it was. If it was accurate then awesome; if it wasn’t – well it’s a movie, not a documentary.

Just as you said you didn’t like the over portrayal of the “evil” German flyers in Flyboys, I thought the Red Baron was shown in exact opposite light; almost to the point of being “angelic”. I found that to be a bit distracting, but was able to overlook it enough to get through the film.

I think the cinematography in Flyboys was a slight bit better – but not by much. Story line was excellent, but could have done without quite so much romance in both movies.

All in all if I was to rate them on 1 to 5: Red Barron would get a 4 and Flyboys a 4.5

Rest assured, Red Barron will have to find its way in to my owned collection of movies for sure; but Flyboys had just a slight edge for me.

A very interesting academic reading is an article by Jonathan B. A. Bailey, The First World War and the birth of modern warfare, centered around the revolution experienced by the artillery in WW1 and the key role it played through the war.

One of my favorite WW1 movies is "Beneath Hill 60".

I agree 'Beneath Hill 60' is a very good film.

Also I enjoyed 'Passchendaele' although it goes a bit over the top (no pun intended) with symbolism at the end.

'Company K' is good too, this is about a company of American Marines going over to France and their subsequent exploits.

Not a movie, but available on DVD is 'The Somme, from Defeat to Victory' is also very good.

And someone has already mentioned 'The Great War' by the BBC - a considered the best factual account and very watchable

Not quite WWI but 'The Battle of Warsaw 1920' looks interesting and rare for a 'modern film' to highlight this time period.

We have Fighters and Bombers (and Airships). Both represent airbases including recon aircraft. So if you keep them close to the frontline they provide LOS - but are also more vulnerable to air attacks (once the necessary techs have been developed).

I see.
Most aerodromes were not very far away from the frontline.

One book that is a must is the History of World War by Liddle Hart, not just a narrative of the war, but also an indepth critlcal analysis

Thanks Cats. I watched it two nights in a row. It was a very well done film and excellent story line. I must say I never knew about there being a tunnel war as well. I know next to nothing about WW1 but am looking to learn more while we wait for this game.

Over a period of 6 nights I watched the extended version of “Lord Of The Rings” – and am now working my way through the extra DVDs. This is about the 20 th time for the movie and about the 3rd time for the extras.

I have heard some say that it was inspired and based on WW1. So does this count as an add to the list on here?

Just started watching a documentary called simply enough, “The First World War”.

I knew very little about WW1 when signing up for the beta testing of this game, but have tried to correct that issue the best I can – mostly through movies and documentaries. Already in only seeing the first two parts of this series, I learned quite a lot about the war. I’m ashamed to say it, but I didn’t even know how it got started; and what I thought was the events was nowhere close to what had happened.
Believe it or not, I do enjoy learning and studying history, but for some odd reason WW1 was always skipped.

I just wanted to mention this series on WW1 and how I have found it to be very enjoyable and helpful to get a better understanding on what it is this game is trying to portray.
