BTW do people prefer the early 4 wheel recon or the 8 RAD one? I usually go for the former, as it has an intrinsic AA value and is available from the start, though the latter has slightly higher ground defense.

In a different thread I've already mentioned this, the moving through zones of control/moving in stages does not seem like a worthwhile trade off to me...against the AI I'd far rather have the extra combat power of course when I up the difficulty level or start playing against a human opponent I might change my mind
Well in later scenarios they are also useful for capping unprotected cities/airfields deep in the enemy territory. (Could also use Paratroopers for that, but at the East Coast landing you dont have any air transports)

8 RAD all the way. You need the movement. There are more recons available later and they are 8 RAD too (but no upgrade-discount -.-)

Actually there have been a few time i wished I had a recon to take a city then move on rather than leaving valuable combat troops a turn behind my main advance...luckily its rare enough that I'm not yet regretting my decision..the good news is I have an ongoing AAR of my 1st campaign so we'll all soon find out how bad a choice I've made!

I also opted for the 4 wheeled recon, but for me it was more important to get the extra 2 movement points (even though it's wheeled vs all terrain).
However, at Barbarossa, an improved RAD appeared with the same movement points as the SDKFZ, while retaining the all terrain bonus. So I switched to it.

I thought the 4 wheel had the same movement as the early 8 RAD, but will have to check...

Or is it that the 8 RAD is "all terrain" whereas the 4 wheel has "wheeled movement" - I didn't notice that difference...

Check my post above :). The Sdkz has 2 more movement points compared to the early RAD. But the Sdkfz is wheeled, while the RAD is all terrain.

If not, could it do so? Perhaps a little "-5 ammo/-4 fuel" text blurb (like the "-4" we see now in combat) when we bomb?
Problem is they can re-supply in one turn.
So you can keep bombing all you want, its gonna make little or no differense.
Not the case at sea.
Also, there are ways to use them quite effectively despite resupplies, as mentioned here.

Not to forget, bombers can paralyze an airfield, as well as blocking it's supply ability. If done at the time when enemy fighters pull back to refuel and rearm, it'll cause enemy fighters to fall from the sky without a fight.

2 Recon units and at least 1 Strat bomber (which is great in obliberating ships) are a must in my core; the other aux units are IMO a waste of slots.

Yep, I believe Horseman are speaking from experiences here.

The thing about Recons in campaign is that you will get one or two from AUXs for almost every scenario that needs one.
As capturing cities goes, well, mounted Infans are doing as fine.
