If you want to see some really good Eastern Front movies, you should find some Russian movies about the Great Patriotic War. Great old movies and great present day movies as well. The war is a very very popular subject for TV mini-series on Russian TV.
BTW, when I was in Kharkiv in May, my fiance took me to meet one of her former employers. It was on Victory Day in Ukraine and it is a HUGE celebration. He was in his "Sunday Best" and wearing a chest full of medals. Sitting on his apartment steps beaming happiness. We talked and drank some vodka together. He was wounded and was in Stalingrad at the end of the war.
WWII is known as The Great Patriotic War and most people there have no idea what WWII means.
It is a very common subject and hangs over most of everything there even today.
