Damn, I morphed into the AI in my Companions Cup match versus Hojo!

Interesting replies. I should have mentioned I'm more of a casual gamer. I look for fun games that are somewhat challenging and not real complex. PC and BA fit the bill for example and it looks like FoG would as well. I looked at the matrix forum and it seems like a lot of folks there play against the computer and there aren't too many complaints. It seems like players here are more hardcore and are more discriminating as far as the AI is concerned.

I think there's a fair spread here too. It's probably more tha hardcore that read and reply to these posts most of the time.

I think the thing with FOG is slitherine has an amazing MP system setup, so that casual gamers that normally never would have played traditional play by email or joined a club ladder or whatnot, ventured in MP and became addicted. To the point that they really dont play vs the AI at all. i personally feel the AI is on par with any other tactical AI of this genre. The real limitations appear to be (if your playing the DAG battles) the Ai force selection isnt the best ( always buys max leaders and puts them in the best units which then are dribbled behind the battle line, where leaders likly should go but doesnt give the Ai a good strike force) One of the feature requests players have been asking for is a way to buy the AI forces for it, maybe even deploy for the AI before letting it do its thing.

I can't make any more purchases anyway until my next ss check comes in on 8-3 so I'm going to think about it some more. I'm wondering how easy it is to play multi against only casual players to get a good game. Do you know the experience level of other players online? Or do you just take your chances and find your ass getting whipped over and over?

This is a good question that is asked periodically. The simplest way would be to post in the "Leagues & Tournaments & Seeking Opponents" forum (see viewforum.php?f=95 ) and explain your position and ask for an opponent that meets your needs. This could be another inexperienced player, or a more competent player to give feedback via the in game messaging or whatever.

An alternative way would be to look in the "League of Extraordinary Gentleman" forum (see viewforum.php?f=113 ) and then "LOEG results and tables" (see viewtopic.php?t=15387 ), choose the game you are interested in and then see who is in which table. It's reasonable to assume that those in Division A are generally better players than those in B, who are better than those in C and so on. Obviously, some players in a lower division may be new and so may be better than their position reflects. There was an overall LOEG performance table of all players (see viewtopic.php?t=25735 ) but the images seem to be broken. If this gets fixed it may be you best insight to finding suitable players.

Another option is to look at the Table of Honour (see viewtopic.php?t=22012) aand this will tell you something about some of the players.

I hope this helps.

Couple of other questions while I'm thinking about it if you don't mind.

It looks like FOG has several expansions and, among other things, they each add features to the game. Are all the features backward compatible? So if I get a few of the expansions and play the original, will that have all those features? Does the game stay with the one executable file to handle the whole thing? How does that all work?
