you haven't said whether this is a general query or relating to a specific game or tournament. Its worth considering what you expect to face in the terrain - because in comps it may well be something quite scary, like Dailami or Catalans and the like. You don't say what the army is, whether it is drilled etc. The other consideration is that Av MF with HW in the open is largely roadkill against mounted, being -- at impact with a likely -3 on the test. And being 8, they will leave a bigger gap when they go.

Well, it happens to be a tourney, but I don't think it matters. If you're going to have the choice (and only the choice) of Superior or Average then what does it matter?

And you think I'm going to deliberately put my MF up against enemy knights do you? Wow, you must have a poor opinion of my generalship.

I'd say it definitely matters, because superior IF will toast average MF (up at impact, better quality and if you remain steady, even in combat thereafter). In a one off game (or a period/campaign game) you would know what MF options your opponent had.

I have no opinion of your generalship - you asked for input. From which I presume you don't always face players who are much worse than you, and don't always achieve your desired matchups. If you are undrilled(which you still didn't specify) Knights or cavalry will be more manouvreable than you - and don't forget you may end up on the steppe with nowhere to hide. Being charged by lancers may be your best bet, compared to the storm of arrows from a shooty cav army.

I would go for one avg of 8 and one superior of 6, I thinks it's more versatile.

The mix can be nice, but as everyone else has stated, in most terrain battles the mass will help. 8MF is seldom enough. I always use my 2x 8 Superior Bow Sword MF in terrain and that is often not even a guarentee of success, though they take a while to beat on but that is 2 Superior groups. Although the Superior are nice you have to consider whether it is worth losing those 2 extra dice for the ability to reroll ones, the still require the same base losses to break.

I like fluffy Seud Efrikens, so I'll go with this suggestion :).

In all seriousness though, I think you're right. I've come to the conclusion that if they act as rear support for my heavy foot I'll be more able to do something with a mix of superior and average.

I'll certainly let you all know when I face off some horrible horde tomorrow night!
