I have to agree, the game is good as it is, it might feel akward when playing but realistically it is not far from the truth.
In real life when the bullets starts flying and kaos/fear takes a hold, a lot of things can go wrong. I am sure that units got split up, got wrong orders, killed by friendly fire, retreating in the wrong direction was very common during the second world war. It still is today, even with better technology avaliable....

The Wehrmacht pushes forward, shattering whatever stands in its way. The Germans reach and cross the river Seine, and hence Paris.
I try to put a new line together, along with two new freshly drafted divisions, but the end is near. RAF is evacuated.
Near Benghazi, the battered Italian troop transport disembarks its survivors, but they are killed by naval gunfire.

If you attack during fair weather you can exploit how the game deals with retreats on turn 2 of Case Yellow to cross the Meuse and maybe even the Oise. The scenario is that the French have setup a defense behind these rivers forming a double defense line. It seems the Germans are forced to attack across river along the entire front, but that's not true. Instead you bombard a French unit at the bend of the river line until it gets to red efficiency. Then you let a German corps attack it. Since the unit probably will have to retreat it can only retreat TOWARDS the Germans since the line is a double defense line. That means another corps can finish off the retreating unit. Do NOT advance into the hex. Now there is a hole in the river line and you can use armor to get across and attack a unit along the river line. Make sure you bombard it with a fighter so it's more likely to retreat. Then the armor attacks and cause a retreat. Then another armor can move into the hole and attack the next unit from the south side of the river.
By doing this you can actually roll up an entire river line and get 3-4 units across. What limits the width is the number of air units you have at your disposal to bombard the units behind the river down to red efficiency.
If the French retreats to the next river line you can repeat the process. So it's actually dangerous for a defender to have friendly hexes on the "wrong" side of the river. That means the river line can more easily be broken.
Do most allied players defend at the belgim border or one hex south to gain the river defensive bonuses?
If the allies defend at the belgium border and germany takes brussels too soon, than all belgium hexes become german controlled, than using judo on the doublewall to force wrong way allied retreats doesn't work.
Just learned that playing a hotseat game against myself.

Its totally true but its two-edged.
After Brusseles fall you will found your armies in orange effectiveness and very close to germans.

But if the british send a mech and an inf corps to France and the french build some inf corps early to put into the second row behind the german main axis to swap into the first row to replace and repair the damaged but unkilled front row inf corps...
...thinking some more: the obvious german reponse is to attack a french inf corps with 2 tacs and 2 tanks to kill it. Then continue to use judo on the doublewall.

The Germans encircle Paris but have not yet taken it. I try a counter-attack against that 4-step mech south-west of Paris, but to no avail.
At least, Egypt joins the Allies. Next turn the Canadian reinforcements can begin to disembark.

Paris falls, France ask for an armistice which is granted by the Germans. Now, Britain stands alone. RAF air reconnaissance reveals no signs of an imminent invasion, however. Given that the end of summer is near, the risk seems to be very low.
I spent my PPs on repairing the RAF. Several convoys are on their way to England, but I can’t cover all.
So far, I achieved what I wanted. The Germans have been delayed, and suffered heavy casualties. Norway and Denmark are still free, although my opponent may decide to invade them right now, before winter hits. A sub flotilla has therefore been detached to patrol the sea in front of Oslo.
I might try something in North Africa soon, but I feel I should have at least another fighter and a tac down there, along with a commander. So, who knows …

Not much going on – buildup in North Africa is proceeding, and a German transport directed to Tripoli is attacked by subs.

Two big convoys have made it to England, and so I buy a commander (Simonds) and a tac for the North African theatre.
My sub spots a good part of the Italian fleet off Benghazi, and I decide to set up an ambush: all available ships take position north of Crete, and will descend upon the Italians next turn.

Naval battle! The Royal Navy sinks an Italian destroyer flotilla and hits several battleships.
In Poland, dispersed soldiers of the Polish army and normal citizens take Breslau with a coup de main.
Bomber command does some damage to German oil facilities.
Simonds arrives to take over the 8th Army.
Actual R&D status …
… and casualties.
Last but not least, the Germans declare war on Denmark and conquer it in a couple of days.

The Regia Marina strikes back and inflicts some damage to our carrier and a battleship. Time to call off the battle and head to port for repairs.
Brave Polish partisans take undefended Breslau from the Germans.

I deploy a new tactical bomber near Cardiff, ready to be shipped to North Africa along with a second fighter. I plan to organize a huge convoy with basically all of the Royal Navy, which will be sent across Gibraltar to Egypt. If the Regia Marina should dare to intervene, it should be crushed by the combined Atlantic and Mediterranean fleets. Also, a carrier, at least one destroyer and one battleship should stay in the Med, thus assuring naval and air superiority.

As expected, Yugoslavia falls. The Axis attacks Norway, too, and there’s not much I can – and will – do about it. At least, the convoy for North Africa is almost ready.

The Axis declare war on Greece. A previously detached corps is shipped to Heraklion in order to occupy Crete and prevent it to become an Axis’ airbase. Athens is holding out.
The convoy reaches Gibraltar.
And there it is … the Axis offensive in North Africa. An Italian tank and mech, five Italian and one German infantry corps are spotted heading eastwards.
