To @ possum have you thought about some historical mod - like Gauls invading Greece for example?I believe it(invasion) was mentioned in Legion Arena. As you managed to place prince of Atlantis forces in the begining of campaign it could be with Gauls just in Nortern part of Greece (llliria,Thracia)

I've just been playing it this afternoon - thanks!
A quick recap: got bitten by the initial invaders since my main army went south to conquer Gortyn originally. They captured Knossos after I'd issued the capital building order (1000 bricks... ouch). Managed to snatch it back with heavy losses.
Slowly expanded, trying to get 1000 bricks together. Finally did, capital was built, things were looking up, got the omen. Decided that it meant I should take the last city of Crete quickly before bad things happened (they were coming from the east, right?). Lost Knossos and my capital building again while army was away (stupid!), as well as Gortyn. Main army charged back in - hero and skirmishers were all that survived, but recaptured Knossos. Quickly recruited troops to take on Gortyn (Hoplites); Aeneas finally carked it at the height of the battle and my men won the day.
Rested on my laurels for a few turns, then decided to expand again (to Rhodes). Just after I'd sent my main army away, the damn Dorian Cycladeans decided they wanted a piece of me. Lost Knossos again.
Ouch. Will continue playing when in less pain

wryun,
Sympathies for your manifold misfortunes, but glad you're playing it and (mostly?) enjoying it
GoT is still a fine, wonderful, splendid, majorly absorbing game. I
still play it on a regular basis, and I would
still recommend buying it.

I've played it couple times, but the first time I played it (wrong scenario)

trust me even I can't figure out how I managed that... but anyway...
2nd time however, I did Ok. I took Knossos on turn one, dealt with the barbarian invasions, sent the army to take Gortyn and then...that's where the fun began. Lost Knossos, had to retake it, which cost me bricks in rebuilding the Capitol, redid that, got the techs to research, sent diplomats out, for some reason I kept getting diplomats from areas that were pretty much nobody. The ones I sent didn't do well in their tasks. Then...just as I thought everything was Okay..the omen struck. I thought, take the city on the Eastern Coast, to secure it, and that is where it all fell apart. As soon as the invasion hit, Knossos fell, Anieas and the army were crushed, and I had to sit and wait for the invaders to finally take the only town I had left.
Live and learn and thank the gods for restart...

I just downloaded this mod and unzipped it to my Gates of Troy directory. It appears to have unzipped (the readme is present in the Gates of Troy directory, as are several other files that show as having been created today), but it doesn't seem to be showing up when I run the game. Is there an installer that I need to run to get the mod installed? I'm probably missing something obvious. Any help that anyone can give me would be appreciated.

It should be inside the mod directory in your Gates of Troy folder; i.e. mod\crete. Take care that the program you used to unzip it didn't automatically create a directory for it (e.g. crete\mod\crete), or you had it set to not create the directories at all.

Thank you for your reply. I created a mod\Crete folder in the Gates of Troy folder. When I run the game I get the little window that offers me the option of loading the Crete mod, but I am not able to actually get the mod to run. All I get is the regular, unmodded, game. I have tried unzipping to the Gates of Troy folder, the mod folder, the Crete folder within the mod folder, and even the saves folder within the Crete folder, but I haven't been able to run the mod. I might try re-installing Gates of Troy onto this machine, or downloading the mod to the other machine where I have Gates of Troy installed. If you, or anyone else, have any suggestions, I will happily give them a try.

Are you sure you're getting the unmodded game? It will have the same scenario list and all, remember.

I tried downloading the mod onto another computer where I also had Gates of Troy installed. With a small bit of fiddling, it's now working. Interestingly, the blurb in the lefthand window of the "New Game" selection screen is different from what is described in the readme, but the mod is running correctly.
It appears that the download didn't work properly on the first computer where I tried to install it, or (more likely) the unzip didn't work properly on that computer. I will copy the mod/crete folders from this computer into the Gates of Troy folder on my other computer, and I expect that it will work fine.
Thank you again for your assistance.

Hey Jeff,
Possum here, author of the mod.
On this second PC, where the mod is running correctly, do you also have Spartan installed? If Spartan is installed, things get weird with the text of intros and in-game messages.

Possum:
Thank you for the information. I have Spartan installed on installed on both the machines where I have Gates of Troy installed, since I like the scenerios from Spartan. It's good to know that the discrepency in messsages does not represent any problem with how the mod is running. It's a fine mod, and I truly appreciate the time and effort that you (like other modders) put into creating something good for the rest of us to enjoy.
P.S. I like your signature tag line. Very clever.

Ahh, thanks, Jeff!
Yes, the relationship between Spartan and GoT is a complex one.
Basically, as one of the lads explained it to me, the mechanism which allows the two games to find each other and integrate their scenarios, (which they do
very well, even if you have different versions of the two games), requires the lang.str and lang_a.str files from Spartan to be used.
If it matters, lang.str and lang_a.str are the "compiled" versions of localisation.txt and localisation_a.txt

I copied the downloaded mod/crete folder into my Gates of Troy folder on the machine where I previously was having problems with it, and now it's working on that machine also. Apparently it was something about the download or unzip on that particular computer. Thank you again for your assiatance.

is GOT better then Spartan

Well, hard to say if it's better...
GoT was a stand-alone sequel to Spartan. GoT uses a slightly-upgraded version of the Spartan engine; the only added feature I can think of is a "zoom in/out" button.
The cool thing is that when you have both installed, they integrate with one another. At that point, you have no need to ever run Spartan again. Just fire up Gates of Troy, and it will show you all the scenarios - both those from Spartan, and the new GoT scenarios.
Note that this works even if you have different versions of the games. I personally have the Matrix DL version of GoT, and the Slitherine Store boxed version of Spartan, but they integrate perfectly, even though they are installed in very different locations .

Gates of Troy also adds some more diplomatic options, some more buildings, and some more units, especially generals and heros which are a very nice addition. It also adds the Troy scenerio where you can build the Trojan Horse (if you get far enough up the research tree). Overall, I agree with Possum that the combination of both Spartan and Gates of Troy is excellent, and I would highly reccommend it.

Thanks, woogle!
I was at something of a disadvantage in listing the features because I bought GoT first
