At Marignano they were hit hard by the artillery but only fought to a standstill after it was overrun by Landsknechts (Black band) and Gensdarmes. At Bicocca they were culled down more because the artillery was fortified (by a sunken road), supported by scores of arquebus AND the access to these was defended by Landsknechts (Frundsberg, this time). The Swiss were unable to overcome that bottleneck and so remained in the field of fire of arquebus and artillery. According to Swiss claims most of them died to the arquebus fire. Artillery was probably in both cases not the main killer, despite getting the best possible target. Canister would have massacred them.

The aim of the rules is that the effect of artillery should be very variable, but that it should not be safe to stand still under artillery fire.
This seems to be pretty much the effect acheived in actual play.

Hi,
In our club games so far 2 gun deployments have been very variable in their results but a recent deployment of a 4 gun battery backed up by the maximum number of Frame guns by the Covenanters has resulted in a lot of grief for their opponents. You do not need to give the artillery a helping hand. As for regimental guns I like the way they are represented, they work well in a game.

Perhaps light guns not being used as battalion guns might be more useful with a slighter longer range. Many armies had numbers that were not, apparently, used in conjunction with infantry units.

yes if you can roll well it can be successful. If you roll low don't expect much. Also don't let it stand out front to get shot up or charged even if you have support behind it. I have managed to rout them from shooting. Blathergut usually runs one in our games, lately he has rolled it up fire it off a few times then let the supports move up front for the inevitable bashing I want to give him.
I would say its hard to place them properly, but they can work out if you are lucky enough.
