IIRC there was some discussion in the beta testing phase on whether mounted fighting in two directions had the choice of which rear direction they break off in. Some people thought they had two rears, some thought no rear. The net result was an explicit prohibition on breaking off, which doesn't resolve the current issue.
It probably needs another explicit statement in v2.0.
