At a minimum I expect that with RoR you will be able to choose the unit to which the commander is assigned so you can pick a unit type you won't expect to use in combat if you want your general to play it safe. I suspect that LH generals may well prove very popular

I suspect that LH generals may well prove very popular .
LH generals will not be able to provid rear support, but they will be excellent for stopping routing friendly units. I think I will stick to the Cav option though..

Cav is fine if it is drilled, a bit less handy if it is undrilled. I guess it will depend on a lot of lists on what troop type should work well and isn't so restricted that you wouldn't want to lose one of them for a non-fighting general. Who knows, for Mid Republican Romans, maybe the right choice may turn out to be drilled Italian ally MF
