I do not have any experience with the TT version so I don't know how it treated the "elephants with swords" issue.

Treated it pretty easy, they don't get swords in the army list so no POA for having swords 
Now swords and armour don't count against elephants so it all evens out that the elephants go into the fight with a +, unfortunately being in BGs of 2 models they tend to have to take cohesion tests fairly regularly and if they lose a stand they auto break and die, kind of a great thing that is fragile and can go bad real easily type of weapon.
