If I may make a suggestion regarding the fact that there are more than 16 applicants, one option is to make it a first come first served as already has been suggested.
Another might be to set an end date for taking applications. If there are more than 16 applicants, the excess participants are drawn in a preliminary knockout round where you play a random opponent, the winner advancing to the group stage, the lose being knocked out (a bit like what happens in the European football cup competitions). In future competitions, players who have done well in past tournaments qualify automatically for the group stage, whereas new players play in the preliminary rounds.

Well we have been inundated with entries and we will not be able to offer places to everyone who applied. In the future we hope to automate the competitions organmisation and allow larger numbers of players, but for now we need to keep the size small and manageable.
We are no longer accepting entries.
Thanks to everyone who entered. We'll be letting players in on a first come first served basis so there will be no favouritism! We'll be letting you know in the nmext few days who is in, what groups each player is in and what the initial draw will be. We'll also let you know if you did not get in. For anyone who did not get in we'll put you on the waiting list in case anyone drops out. We're hoping this wont happen but it does mean there is small chance of you getting to play even if you were not one of the first to enter.
