I'd like to quash any rumours that Mr Reilly is a Reigate player. Oscar Wilde comes to mind: "I wouldn't be a member of any club that would have me as a member"

G
Surely that's Marx*, not Wilde ?

Mea culpa - Pete didn't put a club affiliation down on the list that he sent in, and I thought that he had been playing qua Reigate in times gone by. Maybe it was when he was Nik's doubles partner (or am I dreaming that association?)

Who does Pete bat for?

Pete doesn't bat for anybody.

He did play with the Khoregate expeditionary force at Campaign for a number of years though.

I would suggest either [Blank] or "Independent"

Perhaps Pete likes to keep which side he bats for to himself.

Pete ends up as "Wirral" at Britcon and the Challenge. He is definitely not a Reigate player (unless playing doubles with Nik).

Wirral it is then. If I leave it blank the system assumes that he is team-mate of Duncan Thompson, who is also non club-affiliated, and this could affect the random draw.

I heard on Monday that Simon Hall has been very ill indeed, and is bed-bound on doctors' orders over the weekend. Nik G and RB-S have kindly agreed to step in as umpires, and have already been cooking up plans for dealing with anyone asking naughty questions. Best wishes to Simon for a speedy recovery!

Dino Monticoli is stepping into the Swifter as Simon's reserve. He will be using Median, an average kind of army! :D

See you all on Saturday.

Yes there was a time when I could not decide between EAP and Urartian so I took the median. But not any more

At least it isn't likely to be a mean selection.

They are just the standard deviations :-)

Warfare 2009 - the final results

A full listing will shortly go up on the WAR and BHGS websites. However, the final placings were (drum-roll please...):-

15mm Swifter than Eagles

Richard Bodley-Scott - 76 - Neo-Assyrian Empire
Phil Powell - 64 - Urartian
Bruce Brown - 61 - Neo-Assyrian Empire

15mm Immortal Fire/Rise of Rome

Graham Evans - 69 - Thracian
Pete Reilly - 64 - Ancient British
Pete Dalby - 61 - Alexandrian Macedonian

25mm Wolves from the Sea/Decline and Fall

Don McHugh - 78 - Bedouin Dynasties
Andy Claxton - 69 - Dailami Dynasties
Richard Collins - 68 - Norse Irish

I would like to say thank you to everyone for making it a thoroughly enjoyable event, and in particular extend my heartfelt thanks to Nik Gaukroger and Richard Bodley-Scott for stepping in as player-umpires at the last minute!

See you all next year, I hope. Don't forget the space-issues that we suffered across the competitions as a whole this year, which meant that we were unable to get everyone in who wanted to come. There is no guarantee that it will be any better next year - PLEASE get your entries in early!

Thanks for the great organisation Tim!

My only plea would be for more time between games to visit the trade stands next year?

Cheers

Another excellent weekend, thanks to everyone involved. I echo Pete's call. Usually there is too much time to visit the trade stands, but another 15 minutes this weekend would have been just right. The demonstration games also looked quite interesting.

Once again at a competition I had very agreeable opponents. If any non-competition FoG players are thinking of having a go at a tournament and have heard unfortunate stories about unpleasant opposition, don't be put off. The current group of FoG players in the UK are a really excellent bunch of people.

Yup, thanks to WAR once again.

Also my personal thanks to Roger and Ian Stewart who took umpire rulings that they disagreed with in a most gentlemanly manner - especially Roger to whom I went back to 5 minutes later to say I'd got it wrong to his disadvantage

Agreed on all points, esp the organisation. The speed of the draw, esp on Saturday lunchtime, certainly caught me out.

Maybe some of the traders would like to arrive early on Sunday, when there were quite a few people milling around but only the B&B (and the food stalls!) doing business.

Anyone know what Pete Reilly's list/tactics were? I didn't expect the Ancient Britons to do well in an environment full of Super Skilled Legionaries. Was he using a cunning plan?

Tim,

Many thanks to you and the rest of WAR for a great show and competition. I agree with all the other comments about fantastic organisation and the need for more time to visit the trade stands.

The list was:

IC
2 TC

1 BG 6 LF JLS
3 BG 4 LH JLS
1 BG 8 LF Sling
4 BG 4 Chariots
2 BG 8 MF Warriors
1 BG 10 MF Warriors
1 BG 8 MF Elite Warriors

Tactics - from the man himself:
My cunning plan is a closely guarded secret …. Especially from me ;-)

Roll only 6s?

Get a lucky draw in opponents?

I guess my only plan can be summarised as impact foot are hard, terrain is usually not your friend and fight on a 7 ft frontage.
