The map was very challenging for the Norman army, which lacked any medium infantry. Between the two armies, a narrow patch of clear terrain separated two rough patches, with the patch on the Welsh left leading from some woods to a small lake, and, on the right, leading to a large woods. So it was almost impossible for the Normans to co-ordinate their forces. As a result, the Viking heavies on the right were able to defeat/contain the Norman left while Welsh mediums penetrated the woods on the right, holding back the shieldwall and hiding their left flank in the woods until forces were diverted elsewhere. Nonetheless, the Normans fought well, with the actual battle being closer than the score suggests due to some Welsh/Viking rallies.
