Well hopefully an official solution will be adopted for Knights in the near future.
Your work around sounds very sensible, but until an official solution is adopted, I guess I'll just put off trying out MP. I'd have enough problems just playing with the regular rules.

I dont think Mamaluk cav qualifies the first 100 years for heavy in that regard

I wouldn't let that stop you. The game is far more about empire building and making good overall decisions anyway.

That is my recollection regarding the mamluk HC, they are exempt from the house rule, at least early game.
