In the spirit of Christmas giving Eric gave me the boys from Meroe and it quickly devolved into a @#$%show, because of course it did. Oh and the large stream running across the middle dominated events as streams tend to do.

The more numerous and maneuverable Carthaginian infantry were able to outflank the Ptolemaic pikes.

Our battlefield was dominated by a large multi-level hill, with a difficult heights, on the Nubian left flank. I moved almost everything onto the hill with a few medium foot holding our right flank in a patch of rough going. The Persians had brought a lot of horse archers and initially had the better of the battle - shooting while I tried to unstick the logjam of troops in confined space. Eventually though we won the battle on the hill, our raw medium defensive spearmen proved effective at driving off the horse archers and our cavalry and camels got into their rear.

Here I won took the hill also with Dailami and Irregular foot while I sent heavy foot along the lower slopes. That was where the battle was won. Nubian cavalry backed by archers give as good as they got across the rest of the battlefield.

The Ptolemaic lights advantage early on was able to whittle at the swarm of Carthaginian infantry. This allowed the pikes to fight off some infantry before they could get surrounded too much.

Despite having a 24 point lead for a fleeting moment mid game the champions of civilization watched their lead, bit by bit, disappear down the toilet of history. Despite a bloody nose the tenacious hunter gatherers of Meroe just kept chipping away and chipping away until the final relief of night fall allowed an escape from that bloody stream.
