yep..that's it

...when the pike BG finally is free of enemy...it conforms to proper BG formation if/when it tries to move or such.

yes reforming out of combat would make sense, but I think they are stuck where they are regardless while they are fighting.
Gee Blathergut, if you hadn't insisted on making me move that 4th guy over to make 3 full ranks I might not have managed to rout both your Roman units
Guess I should say thank you for that one.

Better clear this up once and for all, as this stream has ended up muddling two issues, as had another. An unfortunate effect of multiple pike problems that have some similarities and both ebign expanded into the same issues but from different directions ...
For base removal and replacement
- You lose a base from the front rank facing the BG that did you the most damage
You can replace this by shuffling up from the rear (so could do this and end up 4-2)
Or you can, and must if no rear left, fill it by using a non-front rank base from elsewhere in the BG (so could end up 3-3)
There is no resrtiction in the use of bases providing dice or POA's - they just have to be non-front rank (imagine a 3 base BG fighting 2 wide that loses the front rank from the file with 1 - it has to replace this with the rear base even though it is clearly providing a dice)
You can be froced out of normal formation by combat, and simply reform at the first opportunity before you move
For feeding more bases in
- Here you are restricted and cannot move a base that is already providing dice or a POA effect
So with pikes you cannot expand a 4th rank out if it is helping, but could if not in OPEN terrain where it doesn't have any benefit (although what the pikes are doing there at all is a good question!!)
Hope that clears it up
