With two victories, I now have 11 gold to spend (9 income+2 in reserve from last turn):
5 gold upkeeps my current forces
2 gold to upgrade my size 3 army to a size 4 ("Emperor") army
4 gold to recruit a new strength 2 army

Great! Hadn’t thought about the upgrade possibility, but it’s of course perfectly legit. Will update rules accordingly:
- An existing Byzantine army may (as part of raising armies) be upgraded to higher strength at a cost in gold amounting to twice the strength difference.
- Example: the cost of upgrading an existing Byzantine strength-2 army to Emperor (strength-4) level would cost 4 gold.
Round II: phase 2. Enemy Movements

I, as the Enemy Player, assign my two received movement points as follows:
1.
Huns from Moesia to
Bulgaria.
2.
Persians (again!) from Persia to
Syria.

The emperor leads his army in person to confront the Huns in Bulgaria
One strength 2 army fights the Persians in Syria
The last army moves to extinguish the Gothic threat in Italy

Great, I’ll discuss with SnuggleBunnies and keep you in mind for later rounds. Probably a game in round 3 or 4, depending on the circumstances.

Just out of interest ( - and sorry if this is already explained somewhere - ) what kind of army lists are used, if the enemies survive longer then in real history? (For example if the Vandal army is never used and makes it to turn X. or something.) Would they still use their old list or be converted to something more time-appropriate?

It's a (mostly) two person campaign, so really whatever kronenblatt and I agree to. I would imagine we'd choose something most appropriate. So for example for Goths in turn 1 we did Germanic Horse Tribes, for turn 2 we're using Ostrogoths. If they survived beyond their historic timeline I think the most logical pick would be Lombards, as they were another Germanic people occupying Italy that gradually became more erm for lack of a better word 'Romanized' .
Just my two cents tho, and the campaign concept is ultimately kronenblatt's and if our ideas weren't fully aligned I would defer to his preference.

Agree. We discuss prior to each battle and pick whatever makes most (alternative) historical sense and least historical lack of sense.

Also I expect once period 2 comes along on turn 5 the Vandals, whether they have been used or not will be replaced by the strength 4 Arab army.

Actually not, since "
an inactive enemy can not be activated for as long as there still is another enemy army active in the same track that has not yet been pacified" (from "
2. Enemy Movements phase" in the rules).

This said, I'd better get going with the Vandals...

Thanks for the answer! The concept of this campaign is really interesting...if you reach the FOGII: Medieval era, I would be interested to play the enemy in one battle if that is possible/ okay with you two

I’ll keep that in mind, Lennard. Let’s see what the situation is then.

GG. As usual, a closer match than the final result suggests, but terrain and some chain routs saved the day.
