Your army in the early peroid would be orginized totaly diffrent then the later. You would be better to try the following:
Treat the handguns with longbow range. Takning away the check for beig shot at by firearms/artillery.
This is only streching the rules 50 years foward.
Your orginaztion would be 1/3 Samurai (up to 1/2 mounted), 1/3 Ashigaru with Yari, 1/3 Ashigaru with Teppo with a few bowman if you want mostly as a skirmish unit.
Early peroid your army would be about 1/2 Samurai and most would be mounted or on foot with bow. This was the Samurai weapon. The remainder would be retaniers armed with Naganta The evil 2 hand cutting weapon which went away in the later peroid except for monks.
Look At Assualt Minitures to get a idea how diffrent the Samurai looked. Early Samurai armor was designed to make the Samurai a mounted gun platform for archery. And his arc was to the front of the horse to about 90 degrees.
Also I would try and orginze them in units of 4. Check out Killer Katanas I or II. Even if you don't like the rules they are weath of information on the peroid.
And I always thought it is easier streaching the rules 50 years than using figures that are post dated by as much as 200 years.
The Gempi wars are very popular and Opsrey does a book on them.
