Thanks, Terminator. Your advice is sensible, of course. I already implemented Gabe's advice to the extent possible. There are not many locations on the Avalanche map (yet). Fortunately most of the early battle took place on coastal plains without much stuff in it. I considered using Erik's map but I didn't think it was very good for a campaign based on battalion sized units. I cut the hex size down to about 1/2 a kilometer. He has a lot more towns than I have. If I put more towns in it would definitely affect gameplay, and I'm way beyond that now.
Erik,
I did not set it up like that -- I don't have very many locations on my Salerno map so I had to go heavy on them and add some for critical crossroads, highways entering the map, etc. Not much rhyme or reason -- when I needed more, I added more some place. Not scientific at all.
ColonelY,
-VP Locations changing hands is driving me crazy. I don't know a way to fix except add more trigger instances (instead of 1, I'm going with 5 on some to allow change of hands twice). One location at Salerno almost always changes hands in the early turns... I don't know how to fix it yet.
-Regarding the big counterattacks, these in the first scenario are little bitty ones. They get a little stronger in the second scenario and YUUGE! in the last one. So I want the beachhead to be secured in Phase I, in Phase II I want it expanded a little, and in Phase III defended to the bitter end. There will be an additional British Armored Division and the 82nd airborne to help out in the last scenario. Mascarenhas has provided some practical advice as to how to end the campaign. I hope I am smart enough to implement it. I wanted to end the campaign with a pistol-and-bullwhip duel between Generals Mark Clark and Kesselring...
- I have almost gotten the Phase II Scenario done, it works fine, just gotta figure out some details. Thanks for commenting, you always raise quite relevant issues that were percolating in the back of my mind.
thanks, all!
