Think units like these should be limited in numbers but you need to be able to upgrade to it. The idea of a gift unit is fine to limit it to 1 unit but also need to limit how it could be reinforced.
The issue with gift units is they are treated like new unit with no experience which is OK for infantry but equipment wise in reality they would be given to an experienced crew.
Think they just need to be treated as prototypes in same way as they work in core game if you take that perk.
Also on a side note should there be a small experience penalty maybe half star when you upgrade to new gear.

Totally agree on the experience issue. any new expensive weapon would be manned/piloted by the best, most experienced personnel. when the Germans introduced their jets the best Luftwaffe pilots were culled to pilot them. I'm sure the same is true for when the Tiger was first deployed also.

Maybe for the Me262, but I don't think the same could be said for... the Me163 or He162. And that's when the unit has reached full production status, not a limited prototype phase.

the HE 162 was a joke it was made of wood and glue and totally unreliable. it defies reason to develop and expensive prototype which u r counting on to be a game changer, then send it into combat with an inexperienced crew?

In my opinion an understrength prototype should work like testing, like it was still on development.
The prototype should be available for limited time, for one or two missions and we could earn comendations points if we assure a "plan test" of the unit.

I don't think I would especially if it's slot hungry. A unit that has like 5 max strength is just to venerable to indirect fire to be worth using imo. Like 1 artillery piece or any air unit could easily deal/suppress 2-3 points of strength at which point the unit becomes essentially useless on support fire. For like 4-5 core slots especially early in the war, I would rather just have like an overstrength panzerjager I or something like that. At 15 strength it won't be suppressed easily and I believe it would deal roughly the same damage as a 5 strength emil or dicker (They might get an extra kill but I think the downsides to them are bigger than that).
If the understrength units had say reduced core slots I think they would be more worthwhile. But I don't think I would pay like 4 core slots for a 5 strength dicker max compared to other options. Maybe I'm wrong on how useful it is but I just really don't see it being useful without some extra help.

I don't like how prototypes/captured equipment are implemented and don't use them even at full strength...
Reduced strength prototypes are even worse...
I really don't see much in the way of redeeming features for the whole concept.
Unless something significant changes to make them significantly better, I don't see myself ever using them...
IIRC, in the original series they were "free"... If a prototype had some sort of long-term benefit (i.e., like a permanent -1 core slot for given size), then I would be much more open to them...
I find that less good units with reduced slot requirements are generally better than big/better units with 2x the slot cost...
