Crossbows vs knights are very effective if you can protect the crossbows. Dismounted knights are dangerous against most anything. All the Norwegian Huscarls were still standing at the end of the battle and were just getting into the action. Glad it finished at that point.

I managed to disrupt and after some bouncing, fragment some Norwegian knights and the Huscarls were not able to get to grips with my infantry until right at the end. They had started doing damage to my knights and repeated charges were just bouncing off their shieldwall. fortunately all the other troops had succumbed to missile fire and effective charging and flanking. The Norwegians had so many armoured options I thought that I needed the crossbows to balance the threat. It worked well, if not perfectly.

A funny battle, marked by the ridiculous death of both Commanders in Chief in the first clash of the infantry lines, on two successive turns. While it only affected the strenght of the Jewish pike line, it almost shattered the Thracian right wing. But then, the bad omen was replaced by hard luck and a single flank attack on the thureophoroi caused a chain rout that saved the thracians from joining Ares's domain.
