Afghan fighters flew MiG-21MFs and MiG-21bis (by the spring of 1980, there were also 50 MiG-17F/PFs in Mazar-e-Sharif, used for attack missions). Many of them were not inferior to Soviet pilots in piloting technique, and the reason for this was not due to a deep ‘ideological conviction’. Afghan pilots, for the most part, came from noble Pashtun and Tajik clans, felt at ease in the air and paid little attention to all sorts of instructions and restrictions favoured by our Air Force. At the same time, however, their combat effectiveness could not be called high: the Afghans flew only 2-3 days a week with the obligatory Koran-prescribed Friday off. They did not bother to fulfil combat missions, considering the bomb load of a couple of ‘hundreds’ quite sufficient (and they often lay down away from the target, especially if it was covered by anti-aircraft fire). It happened that the gunners ‘forgot’ to remove the checks from the bomb fuses, turning them into useless cargo. The headquarters of the 40th Army noted: ‘in independent actions Afghans lose the desire to fight’ and in order to increase the effectiveness of combat work, Soviet instructors often had to take seats in the cockpits of Afghan aircraft.

The training of allied aircraft left much to be desired, and in case of the slightest damage the planes were not even attempted to be repaired, being used for spare parts, or even simply plundered. A landmark of the Shindand airfield for a long time was a plane that had ‘missed’ landing, its tail sticking out of a breach in the wall of the local control centre, from the first floor of which commands continued to be heard as if nothing had happened. The DRA Air Force lost 3-4 times more aircraft than the Soviet units - the receipt of free equipment from the USSR was guaranteed. However, no one had any illusions about the fate of the supplies, and among these aircraft there were some repaired machines that had managed to fight and still had asterisks on their hulls - marks of combat missions. In total, according to official estimates, more than $8 billion was spent on military aid to the DRA.

The main burden of combat work remained on the Soviet aviators, who knew neither weekends nor holidays. During a year in the DRA they had time to fly 2.5-3 norms of ‘peacetime’, with some aircraft flying 450-470 sorties. In 1984 the IA accounted for 28 per cent of the total number of reconnaissance flights and 6 per cent of all reconnaissance missions. The intensity of combat work by fighter pilots was a third higher than in the IBA and outstripped even attack pilots, second only to helicopter crews. Over time, the even greater workload forced the regiments to be staffed with second-line pilots and technicians from other units. This allowed more aviators to gain combat experience and, if possible, to keep the load on people within acceptable limits (although even so, each working day, starting before sunrise, lasted 12-14 hours, and the regiment had time to ‘process’ 15, 20, or even 30 tonnes of bombs, and the ‘acceptable limits’ were reduced to the fact that people still did not fall from fatigue).
Although many sorties had to be carried out at the limits of equipment capabilities, the reliability of the MiG-21 proved to be very high. The regiments had 85-90% of combat-ready vehicles, and even for complex systems - navigation and radio equipment - the number of failures was small. The lantern glazing, which quickly turned yellow and lost transparency from the sun and dust (a shortcoming inherited and MiG-23), caused complaints. Ubiquitous, all-pervasive dust completely clogged the fuel filters after 5-7 hours of operation and disrupted fuel automation, which threatened to stop the engine in flight. In the summer heat the landing aircraft were met with watering machines or simply with buckets of water to cool down the overheated brakes faster - otherwise the pressure could ‘blow up’ the pneumatics. The intensive operation could not but affect the condition of the equipment - due to the lack of time, routine work was done hastily (habitually writing down: ‘...in full’), the planes had to be repaired and patched on the spot. After a year of operation they accumulated numerous defects, their resource was completely ‘exhausted’ and upon return to the USSR the fighters had to be sent for overhaul.

Proof of US involvement in Afghanistan has become an object of hunt.
During the Afghan War, US intelligence services actively supported the mujahideen fighting against the USSR.

Unfortunately, no amount of trophy M16s has stopped the Americans from wanting to supply Afghan fighters. Therefore, American rifles, which had shown their unsuitability in Vietnam, continued to become trophies of GRU special forces. Occasionally, when they fell into the hands of insurgents, they became useless weapons because of their high propensity for breakage and difficulty in maintenance.

I will be releasing my new campaign in the next few days. It takes you fictitiously into the warlike conflict between the Mujahideen rebels and the Soviet army in Afghanistan. The campaign begins in December 1979 and ends in the summer of 1984 (the war lasted longer, I know).
The campaign has 15 missions.
I have added a few new units including, Pakistani Intelligence, Afghan Police, Mujahideen Strela Manpad, Mujahideen Capture T-55, Bonus Units etc.
There are various missions, capture rebel leaders, find and destroy supply depots, dig out rebel nests and so on.
