Cunningcairn's Rhoxolanis 39/45 defeat MikeMarchant's Gepids 47/41
The Gepid's casualties in the last round skew the result in what was a titanic battle that could have gone either way. Thanks Mike for yet another close contest.

Result: Alexandrians beat epos' Samatians, 35/51 to 41/39, 69% to 100%
Rough terrain, hills and pikes made this a hard job for the Samatians but they nearly pulled it off.

Defeat for notjustdon Palmyran 46/46(100%) v Edmund Blackadder Greco-Bactrians 37/47(79%)
Well despite both Bactrian Commanders being killed or ushered from the game the troops actually performed better without them. The Bactrian left flank was dispatched early on in the game. The Palmyran army did likewise and lost his sub-general and the entire left flank as well. Both sides then rushed what they had left towards the centre but alas the Palmyran were a little slower allowing the centre to get badly mauled but did manage to sack the Bactrian camp(nice vino)! Again another close game up till the end.
Cheers

Allendeuce's Bosporans 41/47 (87%) defeat Jakdaw's Alexandrians 55/51 (100%).
Lots of terrain, very close game that one more turn would probably have reversed the results.
Very good game, Jakdaw!

Hello nakedcelt. I picked up your challenge, but couldn't play because you had limited respondees to Legions Triumphant, and my army is from Rise of Rome. Sorry.

MikeMarchant's Gepids 21/41 (51%) beat Nikiforakis' Romans 42/42 (100%)
This was a much tougher battle than the numbers would suggest.
There were no losses on either side until turn 8, with the Gepids manoeuvring for the first 7 turns to face the Roman line that deployed in the far corner of the field. Difficult terrain split the battlefield in the right hand lower corner and a wing of the Gepid army stood off, keeping most of the Roman legionaries occupied, while the remainder of the army moved up the battlefield, swinging to line up in front of the Romans in the right hand corner. The glimmer of flank that the Gepids might have attacked was quickly filled with Roman cavalry and cataphracts, and then half the legions from the bottom right hastily marched up in support. The bottom of the Roman line was held by auxiliaries in rough terrain, effectively sealing that flank off from Gepid attack.
A couple of Roman lights that had over committed to the Gepid rear were quickly dispatched, marking first blood, but not before those units had taken the Gepid camp. And then the Gepids charged. It wasn't wholesale, individual units picked at weak points in the line, while the remainder of the army stood back. As Gepids took damage they backed off to be rallied by the Gepid C-in-C while they were replaced by other Gepids from the line. This practice was repeated over and over until Roman units started to break.
Meanwhile, bottom right, several units of Ostrogoth allies detached from the right wing to threaten the rear of the auxiliaries in the rough, causing some readjustment of the Roman line which allowed a rare rear attack on an auxiliary unit, almost creating a breach. Despite being threatened from both sides, the auxiliaries managed to hold their position and protect the bottom of the Roman line throughout.
The same could not be said of the other end of the line where the Gepids finally managed to break through the cavalry/cataphract/legion defence and the entire left flank of the Gepid army swept in. The looting of the Roman camp gave the extra space needed, and the Roman centre soon folded under the intense pressure as the rest of the Gepid horse charged.
A tough, tactical, and very cagey battle right up until the final charge, and well played by Kostas, despite the seeming disparity in the numbers.
Thanks for the game, Kostas, a pleasure as always.
Best Wishes
Mike
