Having tried to win with the ABs myself, albeit unsuccessfully, I can say that I always feel I'm at a disadvantage everywhere, but in practice it turns out better than I think it will. It's also true that the list allows a lot of flexibility in the balance of the various troop types, so there is a lot of scope for tailoring composition to tactics. I think it requires a lot of skill to get it to perform, but it also needs a different approach to the armies that top players tend to use (i.e. ones containing troops that can actually manoeuvre and fight). Basically you have to match-up superior quantities of troops with negative POA, instead of trying to match up better quality and + POA.
