Not sure I agree completely.

It is part of the game, these so called "horde" armies aren't too difficult to beat if you play well. I am not going to give away the secret of my success versus such armies but they are beatable. Maybe there is an element of psychology involved. I think in a numer of historical battles (Alexander vs Darius?), an army would look enormous to scare the opposition but consisted predominantly of mediocre or worse troops. That might be affecting players as well. Near enough in everything, if you are "negged" (negative) out at the start, you are prob going to lose or not do well.

You have to anticipate some large armies and build an army to take that out.

Having said that and I belive this to be true. Winning initiative gives the player a big advantage, larger armies generally win games, bad match ups and who is using what are the major factors.

Stick to it, until you find the way to beat such armies. Take it as a challenge. I believe you are good enough to win, it just takes a bit of time.

How else could it end? Elite & superior legionaries against average (and some poor) pikes...
I'll take notes though, of my elites continuing poor performance. Of five routed legionarie BGs, four were elite :?
They will have to pull their act together before it is time to meet the superior spears and pikes of several armies left to face.

I agree with Eric over a large army psyching out an opponent. I am (in)famous for fielding a 112ap 500pt Jewish Revolt army in LOEG. A lot of my opponents thought they couldnt win and I even offered to resign or change army because I too thought they were invincible! In the end Eric said persuaded me to keep them and they actually lost about half their battles.

Horde armies can be beaten. I'm not sure exactly what Eric's tactic is, but mine is to target one section of the enemy battle line while refusing/skirmishing against the other. Another mistake that newer players make is to pick all the elite troops from a list and ignore the average or poorly equipped ones. This makes their armies too small and unable to soak up casualties. My advise would be to ditch one or two of those 20pt Knights and pick 4x 5pt MF instead. In most games its not the head on clashes that win battles, its who gets more of their troops into rear-charge positions.

It was 119, not 112...I've checked :D May I add that you suffered 135BP losses at the hand of my Dacians 8)
And good advice on how to take on the hordes. Would say that's my approach as well.

I have beaten large armies, even the infamous nubians with their superior archers. the problem is that you charge into a nubian archer and you may get hit with 25% casualties. you eventually run out of break points. if the break points are revised to take into account the quality of the army, then it would more historical and fairer. Right now i feel the rules disproportionately favour large armies. when i win with them, i don't feel like i have done anything clever in particular, when i lose against them i don't feel like i was beaten by superior generalship.

when i don't feel too clever, my method for beating a large army is to go large also! problem is i don't know what to do with a large army that fills up the map. it takes away creativity.

A serious fight for the crown of the worst dice, but in the end Pyrrhus successfully proved the more unlucky ;-). Thanks for a good game.

that would be Germans 53/51

I was hoping for a tie after my commander was killed fighting archers and fatally weakened my left wing. I ran out of time as he had 4 fragmented BGs at the end of the game and I had troop poised to loot his camp. If Solly gets initiative he'll go 9-0 in this division.
