It's down to the arrival time of the relief army - in the last couple of sieges they arrived just after the the city fell.
When a player sends a relief army I check how many squares it needs to travel & roll for arrival time.

Ok, so you are saying due to the close proximity to my ally, even though the city fell, Romes army was so close it can attack davathojo who does not get to replenish?
If Rome wins the battle what happens to the territory? is it , again 2 losses to kick him out???? Can he withdraw into the city!!??

Maybe those rules should be posted as they seem a little arbitrary

Right, I wasnt asking how the city fell, but your comment about still fighting the relief army. What is the mechanism for that? Is it required? and if so why ? If the 2 fought and say the relief army won, what happens to the territory? (finders keepers? :D )
Sorry - so many questions

You don't have to continue to the Barren Cliffs but can just go home. My comment on the Lost Scrolls was that the assault though successful, was also costly in terms of army points lost. Your relief army has arrived but as I say it's not mandatory to attack.

Proximity helps but does not guarantee arrival in time. In this case yes it arrived just as the city fell - if the assault had failed you'd be fighting so I fail to see the difference. Still upto you if you want to attack him or diband your army.

However if you have not arrived by the time a city falls then he has had time to start with a new 500 point army.

That does not clarify :D

"just as" and "just after" mean pretty much the same thing
So, somewhat clear:
*a relief army has to fight even though the city has fallen based on proximity to the ally
*if the relief army arrives "just as" the city falls the besieger fights at reduced points....
totally unclear:
What happens after the battle??

1) When any type of battle result is posted (nothing to do with a siege) I check any o/s sieges to see if either the defenders are starved out or if any relief army arrives. At the same time the besieger may select to try treachery or an assault but such an attempt happens first in the siege move. Twice now the relief army has arrived 'immediately' after a city has fallen, i.e. the same move so if they attack the new defender then he, the new defender, will not have had time to rebuild his army.
This has only really happened because of 2 assaults upon poorly defended cities (level 1 & even level 2 cities are weak against assaults unless they have inspired commanders or a strong army).
2) A relief army has declared war on the besieger - if it wants to disband his army because the city has fallen then fine. That's his choice.
3) Assuming he marched to aid his ally and arrived as described above then if he selects to attack the defender can opt to fight or withdraw into the city as he doesn't have a fresh army.

And if he then captures it, does he automatically give it back to his ally, or could the vile and treacherous oligarchs of Rome decide to take the city under their "protection" and not give it back to their ally?

O perfidious Roma!

Would anyone be that evil

I'm off to play dba now - I long for some simplicity

So basically, my relief army is in effect attacking a territory owned by Davauthojo and regular rules of engagement apply, except his army is reduced as in effect it is a continuation of his campaign.....

I believe you said you were invading the lands of Brian, but I have not seen any challenge posted on multiplayer. IF you are too cowardly to post your challenge then I will invade one of your few remaining possessions. You have until Monday or I will send a wet soggy and disgusting pigeon bearing the Papyrus of War to you. I don't have a problem of invading your lands if you can't get to mine any time soon

After discussion on the Tuamanite mound further decisions upon embassies to other nations of the lost world have been made.

On a happy note the Shamrock of peace has been sent to and accepted by the nation of New Albia.
Welcome to our new and valued allies.

Let it be known that the gods of war have smiled on the tartan clad hordes (that and that fact that they pillaged the Westralian Whiskey tent). Broome is hereby ceded to dovouthojo in return for a long lasting peace ... lasting the rest of this year.

It was a tight battle even though the Westralians were outnumbered. The army did find some backbone by changing into Germans (from cowardly French). But the Scottish hordes won the day again.
